A WONDERFUL LENS EXCELLENT FOR PORTRAIT PHOTOS
+ Great price and great for beginners and professionals (just belongs to the range)
+ Good workmanship and with metal bayonet (better than the 50mm 1.8 II plastic bayonet)
+ Quiet auto focus noise (no comparison to 50mm 1.8 II buzz)
+ 7 shutter slats for a soft bokeh (the 1.8 II has 5 slats)
+ AF faster and better (the 1.8 II sometimes took forever, especially in low light)
+ close limit 35mm (1.8 II had 45mm)
+ great sharpness and color reproduction
+ now with aperture f1.8 now better sharpness than the 1.8 II ...
+ but only from f2.5 aperture really sharp
+ bright fixed focal length
+ 160gr. easy (the 1.8 II = 130gr., clear when comparing the improvements);)
+ Thanks to STM motor, better and quieter filming possible
+ great sharp inside photos in connection with my speedlite 270 EX II
neutral: (not bad and has no influence on the rating)
0 filter diameter 49mm (the 1.8 II had 52mm) filter no longer usable for the 1.8 STM model
0 Streulichtblende ES-68 (the 1.8 II had ES-62) also here, a new must
0 fixed focal length, so zoom not possible (for all who should not know) it is only a step forward, or back;)
0 by the cropfaktor is the lens on an APS-C sensor actually 80mm long (full size = 50mm) also has its advantages
- no IS (with this strong fixed focal length but also not absolutely necessary)
the change from 1.8 II to the new STM model convinced me completely, better sharpness at f1.8, faster AF, and alone the nicer-softer bokeh at the now 7 aperture blades are fantastic and worth the change.
for all newcomers be said, you get a wonderful sharp, cheap and bright fixed focal length with which the photographing and experimenting is a pleasure.
