How to determine the ideal height for hanging your TV?

You want to neatly hang your new television on the wall. But at what height should the device be? If you hang it too high, your neck will hurt after a while from looking up. And a TV that hangs too low doesn't look pleasant either. In this article, you can read what to keep in mind when hanging your television at the right height.

What should you pay attention to when hanging your TV?

There are no written rules about the best height to hang a TV. The ideal viewing height depends on factors that differ per situation. That's why it's especially important to know what to look for when hanging your TV and think about how those factors apply in your living room or bedroom. For example, when hanging it, you consider the size of your TV, the distance between the TV and your couch or bed, and the eye level at which you watch television.

How big is your television?

The size of your TV directly affects the ideal mounting height. A small TV (up to 32 inches) can be hung a little higher, because you don't have to look up or down as far to see everything. A medium-sized TV (32 to 55 inches) is usually hung at eye level when you are sitting. With a large TV (more than 55 inches), it is often more pleasant to hang it a little lower, so that your neck is not strained when watching the entire screen. Larger TVs have more screen space above and below the centre.

What is the viewing distance?

The viewing distance is the number of metres between the TV and your couch, chair, or bed. That distance partly determines how high you hang the TV. If you are sitting or lying close (for example 1.5 to 2 metres), a lower position is more pleasant, because otherwise you must look up all the time. At a greater distance (3 metres or more) you can hang the TV a little higher, because then you automatically look up a bit easier. When determining the most comfortable viewing distance, the size of your television plays a role. A general guideline is to keep 2 to 2.5 times the diagonal of your TV as a viewing distance. For a small TV of up to 32 inches (81 cm), a viewing distance between 2 and 2.5 metres is ideal, for a large TV of 60 inches (152 cm) or larger, it is about 3.5 metres. The higher you hang the TV, the greater the viewing distance becomes.

What is the eye level to the TV?

To determine the most comfortable eye level to your TV, you can divide the screen into 3 equal horizontal pieces. Ideally, you should hang the top part of your TV at eye level. This is the best for your neck. If you're looking for a TV for the bedroom, the ideal height differs. One time you watch TV lying down, the other time you sit with pillows in your back against the edge of the bed. In that case, it's smart to use a TV mount, so you can easily adjust the TV in height.

Which TV mounting bracket do you need?

Thanks to the right TV mount, you don't have to pay as much attention to the height at which you mount a TV. With a swivel or tiltable mount, you can still influence the viewing distance and eye level of your TV even after mounting. This is especially nice if you often watch television in a slightly different way. There are also fixed TV mounts. This allows you to place the TV flat against the wall, saving a lot of space. It is important to hang a fixed TV mount directly at the best height, because you can no longer adjust the height of the television.

Hanging the TV at the right height

Once you've determined how high you want your TV to be, it's time to hang the device. Carefully measure where the imaginary top part of your TV will go. First, mark all the drill holes with a pencil and check with a spirit level that everything is straight. When hanging, also keep in mind that the cables are concealed. For this, you can drill an extra hole for cable entry or attach special cable ducts.

Ideal viewing height for your TV at a glance

The ideal height of your TV depends on the eye level. So, a television doesn't have a fixed ideal height. To give you an idea, you will find the ideal height to hang the bottom of your TV in the table below if you watch from an average sofa or from an average bed. The ideal height for your TV can therefore vary.

Our advice on how to mount your TV on the wall

There are no hard and fast rules for the best height to hang your TV. This is mainly because many personal factors play a role in determining the right height. For example, you have to consider the size of your TV, the viewing distance between you and the screen and the eye level at which you watch television. With a tiltable TV mount, you can give yourself more flexibility when hanging your TV. With these types of mounts, you can easily tilt and move the TV to different heights and in different viewing angles. This is especially nice if you often watch television at a different eye level, as is often the case in the bedroom, for example.
