What do the design and display of the iPhone 17 and 16 look like?

The iPhone 17 is available in 5 fresh colours: Lavender, Sage, Misty Blue, White, and Black. The iPhone 16 also comes in 5 variants: White, Black, Teal, Pink, and Ultramarine. The iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and Pro Max feature new colours: Sky Blue, Light Gold, Cloud White, Space Black (iPhone Air), and Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue, Silver (iPhone Pro and Pro Max).

In terms of durability and robustness, the iPhone 17 makes significant strides, particularly with the Air, Pro, and Pro Max models. The iPhone 17 Pro (Max) features a new aluminium unibody that improves heat dissipation. This also gives the back of the Pro version a different appearance compared to the iPhone 16 Pro, while retaining the familiar triple-camera setup. The Ceramic Shield 2 front (also on the iPhone Air) is 3 times more scratch-resistant than that of the iPhone 16 (Pro). The back of the standard model, however, still uses coloured glass.

The iPhone 17 has a 6.3-inch display, slightly larger than the iPhone 16’s 6.1-inch screen. The Pro and Pro Max models retain the same screen sizes, though the overall dimensions of all devices have slightly increased. The iPhone Air stands out as the thinnest iPhone ever, weighing just 165 grams, significantly lighter than the other models. All other new iPhones are a few grams heavier.

As expected, Apple has further improved the cameras on the iPhone 17. The front-facing camera has received a significant upgrade, going from 12 MP on the iPhone 16 to 18 MP on the iPhone 17, now featuring the new Center Stage function. This keeps you automatically centred in photos, videos, and FaceTime calls. The new iPhones also offer dynamic framing in 4:3, 16:9, and square formats, so you never have to rotate your phone for group or landscape shots.

The rear main camera remains at 48 MP, the same as the iPhone 16 models, but the ultra-wide camera has made a big leap—from 12 MP on the standard model to 48 MP. Previously, this upgrade was exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro (Max). The optical zoom on the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air remains the same as the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, while the iPhone 17 Pro (Max) now goes further with an impressive 8x zoom, compared to the 5x zoom of the iPhone 16 Pro (Max).

The iPhone 16 (Plus) and iPhone 16e run on the A18 chip, while the iPhone 16 Pro (Max) features the more powerful A18 Pro chip. With the iPhone 17 series, Apple takes the next step: the standard iPhone 17 is equipped with the new A19 chip, while the iPhone Air, 17 Pro, and Pro Max all feature the even faster A19 Pro chip. The improvements focus mainly on speed and energy efficiency. Thanks to the A19 chip, the iPhone 17 works up to 20% faster than the iPhone 16 and as much as 40% faster than the iPhone 15. The A19 Pro chip delivers even stronger performance, improved graphics, and efficient heat dissipation, so your iPhone can handle demanding apps, such as video editing and high-end games, without overheating.

The A19 series therefore offers greater speed, better cooling, and longer battery life compared to the A18 series. That said, the A18 chip is still powerful enough to run heavy games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Both chips are fast and energy efficient. If you game all day and want the best possible speed and battery life, the iPhone 17 models are the better choice.

To choose the iPhone that suits you best, it’s important to consider how you’ll use it and what you’re willing to spend. The iPhone 17 is slightly faster and more powerful than the iPhone 16, making it better suited for demanding games and intensive video editing. If you want to take full advantage of AI features, capture selfies and vlogs with the front camera, and enjoy the best possible battery life, then the iPhone 17 is the right choice.

Do you mainly use the rear camera for photos and videos, care less about the latest AI features, and have a tighter budget? Then the iPhone 16 remains an excellent option. What’s more, the iPhone 16 is available with 128 GB of storage; something the iPhone 17 no longer offers. If you don’t take many photos and use only a few apps, 128 GB is often more than enough.
