How do you choose the right smartwatch size for your wrist?

In general, there are 4 smartwatch sizes to choose from: small (38 to 40 mm), medium (41 to 44 mm), large (45 to 46 mm) and extra-large (47 mm and above). It’s important to choose the right size for optimal comfort, readability and your personal style. In this article, you’ll find out which size suits you and how to measure your own wrist circumference.

Why is the size of your smartwatch important?

The size of your smartwatch determines how comfortable it is to wear, how easy the screen is to read, and whether it suits your personal style. A watch that’s too large can feel heavy, slide around your wrist and get in the way during everyday activities. If it’s too small, it may look out of proportion on your wrist and text or stats on the screen can be harder to read. Choose a size that sits comfortably on your wrist, offers enough screen space for notifications, apps and workouts, and matches your look – whether that’s sporty and robust or minimalist and elegant.

How does a smartwatch work?

What smartwatch sizes are there?

Smartwatches come in different sizes, usually expressed in millimetres. This typically refers to the case diameter (for round watches) or the height/width (for rectangular models). In general, you can divide the sizes as follows:

  • Small (38 to 40 mm)
  • Medium (41 to 44 mm)
  • Large (45 to 46 mm)
  • Extra-large (47 mm and above)

Small (38 mm to 40 mm)

Small smartwatches are ideal if you have slim wrists or prefer a subtle watch. They’re lightweight, sit neatly under clothing and look elegant. The screen is still easy to read for everyday functions such as notifications, health tracking and basic sports tracking.

Medium (41 mm to 44 mm)

Medium sizes, such as those of most Apple Watches, fit most wrists and offer a good balance between comfort and screen space. The display is large enough for detailed stats, maps and notifications, without the smartwatch feeling too heavy or looking overly bulky. For many users, this is the safest all-round choice.

Large (45 mm to 46 mm)

Large smartwatches are a good choice if you have a bigger wrist or like a bolder, more rugged-looking watch. The larger screen is useful if you exercise a lot, regularly check your stats or often use navigation. Do keep in mind that a larger model is heavier and can be less comfortable under tight sleeves.

Extra-large (47 mm and above)

Extra-large smartwatches are designed for very wide wrists or if you prefer a rugged, outdoor look. The large display is ideal for extensive sports and navigation features and offers maximum readability. These models really stand out and are less suitable if you’re looking for a discreet or lightweight smartwatch.

Smartwatches for children (extra small up to 38 mm)

Extra-small sizes are mainly suitable for children. They fit narrow wrists better, are light and comfortable to wear, and are often less prone to damage while playing or doing sports. The screen is compact but still large enough for basic functions such as the time, step counter and simple notifications.

How do you measure the right smartwatch size for your wrist?

Your wrist circumference (wrist size) is the most important measurement for choosing the right smartwatch size. Here’s how to measure it:

  • Use a measuring tape, or a piece of string and a ruler.
  • Wrap the tape or string around your wrist, just above the prominent wrist bone.
  • Read your wrist size directly from the tape, or mark the point on the string where it meets the ends. Then lay the string along the ruler and note the length in centimetres. This is your wrist circumference.

The case size of a smartwatch is the diameter of the watch case. The strap size is the width of the strap where it connects to the case. Both are given in millimetres.

Are there differences in smartwatch sizes between men and women?

Women generally have a smaller wrist circumference than men, which means the ideal case size often differs. A size that looks well-proportioned on one person can appear too large or too small on someone else. Smartwatches for women are often smaller than smartwatches for men, so keep this in mind if you prefer a larger screen. If you want to be sure which size and model will fit you comfortably, always measure your wrist circumference first and use that as your starting point when choosing a smartwatch.

Choose the right smartwatch size by first measuring your wrist circumference with a measuring tape, or with a piece of string and a ruler. Once you know your wrist size, it’s easy to determine whether a small, medium, large or extra-large watch is the best fit for you. The right size will give you comfortable wear, good screen readability and a style that suits you.
