Would you like to take photos more often? If, for example, you spend a lot of time in beautiful nature or watch your child’s football match every week, it’s great to capture those moments. There are many different cameras available, so the question is: which one suits you best as a beginner photographer? This article helps you make that choice.

There are many different cameras on the market. The following 5 types are most commonly used by beginner photographers:

A DSLR camera is a camera that’s also used by professional photographers because it offers many different functions. A DSLR has a mirror in the body that reflects the light towards a viewfinder. You take the photo while looking through the camera’s lens. This means you see exactly the subject you are going to photograph, with the exposure as it will appear in the photo. A DSLR has an interchangeable lens, allowing you to give free rein to your creativity. A DSLR camera is a good choice for you as a beginner photographer if you enjoy capturing people, nature, animals and buildings as well as possible.

A mirrorless camera is most similar to a DSLR but is often smaller and lighter. A mirrorless camera does not have a mirror in the body, so it takes up less space. The subject you are aiming at appears on the camera’s electronic display, allowing you to adjust the settings before you take the photo. Like a DSLR, a mirrorless camera has an interchangeable lens. This means you can switch lenses to take different types of photos, for example a wide-angle lens for landscapes or a telephoto lens to capture fast-moving animals. A mirrorless camera is a good choice if you want a camera with lots of options that is not too heavy to carry around easily.

Full-frame cameras are cameras with a sensor that allows you to capture a larger part of the surroundings in your photo. There are full-frame versions of both DSLR and mirrorless cameras. Another major advantage of a full-frame camera is that you can take bright and sharp photos in low-light situations. If you plan to take a lot of photos in dark rooms or in the evening, a full-frame camera is a good option for you.

Compact cameras are usually very small and easy to use. They will, so to speak, fit straight into your pocket or bag and have just one lens, which cannot be changed. That doesn’t mean you can’t take high‑quality photos with a compact camera. A compact camera often has an optical zoom function, allowing you to shoot closer in or further away. Compact cameras also often have automatic features that help you easily take the best possible photos. This makes them a popular type of camera for beginners.

An instant camera is a camera that prints a photo straight away after you’ve taken it. An instant camera has a built‑in printer that produces a small paper photo from the camera. You might know this type of camera by the name Polaroid. Strictly speaking, this is actually a brand name for instant cameras, which over time has become synonymous with instant camera. This type of camera is a good choice if you want a camera that lets you take fun, spontaneous photos that you can share with your friends immediately.

Nature has a lot to offer. Even in the Netherlands alone you’ll find beautiful forests, lovely beaches and dramatic sand drifts. This natural scenery is also a very popular source of stunning photos. Are you keen to head out into nature as a beginner photographer? Then you need a camera that allows you to switch easily between functions, angles and lenses. One moment you’ll want to zoom in on a beautiful butterfly, the next you’ll want to capture an entire dune. This calls for a camera with plenty of features. A DSLR camera offers this, although they are heavy and less convenient to carry around. That’s why, as a beginner nature photographer, we recommend choosing a mirrorless camera.
Do you enjoy taking nice photos of people around you? Then you need a camera that can clearly separate the subject (the portrait) from the background. It’s also important to be able to control the lighting properly, otherwise the main person in your photo won’t stand out. If you’re planning to take lots of portraits, we recommend buying a compact camera. These cameras have a handy portrait mode, which helps you take the most beautiful portraits. Want to photograph someone at a party? Then an instant camera is great fun to use, so you can hand them a print straight away.

Do you enjoy taking team photos or capturing all your aunts and uncles at a family gathering? Then you need a camera that keeps everyone in the group sharp in the photo, even if they’re moving or standing far apart. The best type of camera for group photos is a full-frame DSLR. With this, you can take great photos of all your teammates or family members, no matter how large the group is.
Are you planning to go to lots of sports matches with your new camera? Then it’s important that your camera can take many sharp photos in less than a second. Before you know it, you’ve missed that great move from the striker or that crucial point from the tennis player. It’s important to use a camera with fast shutter speeds. In general, you can take the fastest series of photos with a mirrorless camera, although there are plenty of DSLRs that can shoot quickly as well.

Do you enjoy photographing beautiful architecture or famous buildings? Then you’ll want a camera that allows you to zoom in and out easily, otherwise you won’t capture the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Tower of Pisa properly. You’ll also want your camera to have enough features to show the building clearly while gently blurring the background. For photographing architecture, we therefore recommend a full-frame DSLR camera.
