How long does a washing machine last?

A washing machine is one of the most important appliances in the home. We use it several times a week to keep our clothes clean – but how long can you expect it to last? And what can you do to help it last longer? This article explains the average lifespan of a washing machine and how to make yours go the distance.

Average lifespan of a washing machine

The average lifespan of a washing machine depends on several factors, such as:

  • Washing machine brand
  • How often you use the washing machine
  • How well you maintain it

A household that does laundry daily will need a new machine sooner than someone who only does laundry once a week. You therefore have some control over the lifespan of a washing machine. The better you maintain your washing machine, the more washes it will last. For example, a machine will last longer if you clean it properly and descale it regularly.

On average, a washing machine can last a long time, but this depends on the factors mentioned above.

How do you extend the life of your washing machine?

A well-maintained washing machine lasts longer. Simple routines like descaling, cleaning and loading it correctly helps avoid wear and tear. Below are tips to keep your washer in top shape for years.

Wash regularly at 60 or 90 degrees

Washing at 30 °C saves energy – but it also lets bacteria and mould build up inside your machine. Once a month, run a hot wash at 60 °C or 90 °C with no laundry. This clears out soap scum and kills germs, especially in the drawer and rubber seal.

What should you do if your washing machine smells?

Choose the right amount of laundry

Don’t overload the drum. Too much laundry puts strain on the motor and bearings, leading to faster wear. Always follow the maximum load advice in your user manual. A good test: you should be able to fit a flat hand between the clothes and the top of the drum.

Pay attention to the amount of detergent

More detergent doesn’t mean cleaner clothes. In fact, excess detergent can clog the machine, cause mould and leave residue. Always measure carefully and follow the packaging instructions. Many energy-efficient washing machines have auto-dosing features – use them if you can.

Check your clothes for sharp objects

A loose coin, hairpin or pen can do serious damage inside your washer. Check pockets before loading your laundry. Watch out for underwires, open zips, and broken buttons – small parts can jam the drum or damage the motor.

Keep the drum door open after each wash

Moisture remains in the drum and seal after every wash. If you close the door right away, mould and bacteria can grow. Leave the door and detergent drawer open for a few hours to air dry and stay fresh – and protect the rubber ring.

Level the washing machine

If your machine isn’t level, it will shake during the spin cycle. These extra vibrations from a washing machine put stress on the motor, bearings and frame. Use a spirit level to check and adjust the feet by twisting them. A stable washer lasts longer, runs more quietly and uses less energy.

Our advice on extending the life of your washing machine

A washing machine is a significant investment, so you want it to last as long as possible. Regular maintenance, such as descaling and cleaning your washing machine, can prevent many problems. Use the right amount of detergent, don't overload the drum, and run a hot wash monthly to kill bacteria. Always check pockets for sharp objects, leave the door open after washing, and make sure your machine is level. These habits will help extend the life of your washing machine.
