Washing machine leaking water: causes and handy solutions

What should you do if your washing machine is leaking? If water is coming out from the bottom of your washing machine, the filter or the drainpipe is likely blocked, or the base plate may be leaking. If you notice water leaking from the front, there could be an issue with the inlet or drain hose, or the washing machine door may not be closing properly. Whatever the problem, you’ll find a solution here.

What to do if your washing machine is leaking water from the bottom?

First, check whether the drain filter or drainpipe is blocked. The filter is located at the bottom right of your washing machine and can become clogged. You can solve this by cleaning the filter thoroughly. If water is coming from the drainpipe, the drain hose is probably inserted too deeply into the pipe. Carefully pull the drain hose out of the pipe and reinsert it, ensuring it is no deeper than 15 centimetres into the drain. If the base plate of your washing machine is leaking, you may have used too much detergent. In this case, unplug the machine, tilt it, and allow the water to drain out – using, for example, a brick to prop it up. Leave the machine to dry for a day before plugging it back in.

What to do if your washing machine is leaking water from the front:

First, check the drain hose. Is it still properly connected to the machine, or is it damaged? If it’s just loose, tighten it securely. If it’s damaged, you should replace the hose as soon as possible. There could also be a problem with your washing machine door. If a shirt or jumper is caught in the door, water can leak from the front. Switch off your machine, unplug it, and turn off the water supply. Then remove any clothing caught in the door. Another possible cause is a tear in the door seal: the rubber ring around the drum’s edge. If that’s the case, call a technician to have the seal replaced.

Tips to prevent leaks in your washing machine

The most important tip to avoid leaks in your washing machine is to clean it regularly. Clean the filters every 3 months and ensure the drain hose does not get blocked. This not only helps prevent leaks but also extends the lifespan of your washing machine. Another tip is never to use too much detergent. Excess detergent can build up, causing blockages and leaks. Always use the amount specified on the detergent packaging. If you have both a washing machine and a tumble dryer, always stack them correctly: washing machine at the bottom, dryer on top. Never do this the other way around, as it can also cause leaks.
