On 16 March 2026, Apple announced the new AirPods Max 2. On this page, you can compare all the differences and similarities between the AirPods Max 1 and AirPods Max 2, so you can see exactly which model suits you best.

AirPods Max 1 vs. 2: summary of the differences

Apple’s AirPods Max are popular wireless headphones with modern features. The AirPods Max 2 offer just a few more features than the AirPods Max 1. The main differences between the AirPods Max 1 and AirPods Max 2 are:

  • The new H2 chip, which provides more processing power and smarter features such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Live Translations.
  • Up to 1.5x more powerful Active Noise Cancelling than with the AirPods Max 1.
  • A newer, more stable Bluetooth 5.3 connection.

Different chipsets in AirPods Max headphones

A close-up cutaway of two headbands reveals dark electronic modules labelled Apple H1 and H2 chips, set tegen een heldere neutrale achtergrond.

The first-generation AirPods Max run on the H1 chip, while the AirPods Max 2 feature the newer H2 chip. Both models still offer the same strong foundation: personalised Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Lossless Audio and low-latency audio via USB‑C. This means you hear the sound of films, series and games all around you, even when you move your head. Lossless Audio and low-latency audio via USB‑C ensure you hear your music in studio quality, with extremely little delay between picture and sound when you connect the AirPods Max to your device via USB‑C – ideal for gaming, films and creative workflows.

The biggest difference between the 2 chips is that the H2 chip enables smart features such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation and Live Translations. The H1 chip doesn’t support these features.

Active Noise Cancelling and Adaptive Audio

Both models offer powerful Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) for an immersive listening experience. Thanks to the H2 chip, the AirPods Max 2 suppress up to 1.5 times more ambient noise than the first generation with the H1 chip. Adaptive Audio automatically adjusts ANC and Transparency mode to your surroundings: loud sounds are reduced more strongly, while important sounds remain audible. In Transparency mode, you can still hear what’s going on around you, so you stay aware in traffic.

Communication during calls

Both headphones support clear calls via built-in microphones. Thanks to Spatial Audio and the overall sound quality, voices sound natural on both models during phone and video calls. The H2 chip adds smart features on top that make conversations run much more smoothly:

  • Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume of your content, reduces background noise and amplifies the voices of the people around you as soon as you start talking.
  • Voice Isolation focuses on your voice and suppresses ambient noise, so you sound clearer and your conversation partner is less disturbed by background sounds such as screaming children on public transport or wind.
  • Live Translation, in combination with Apple Intelligence, translates conversations almost in real time and supports direct communication between people who speak different languages – something that isn’t available on the AirPods Max with the H1 chip.

In addition, podcasters, musicians and content creators benefit from studio-quality audio recording and remote camera control with the AirPods Max 2, making the H2 in the AirPods Max 2 a far more powerful tool for communication and content creation, while the H1 mainly provides the basic call features.

Bluetooth support

Both generations offer a stable wireless connection with Apple devices and support the same core features, such as quick pairing, automatic device switching within the Apple ecosystem and low‑latency audio via USB‑C when listening with a cable. The main difference lies in the combination of the H2 chip with Bluetooth 5.3 on the AirPods Max 2 and Bluetooth 5.0 with the H1 chip on the first generation. Bluetooth 5.3, together with H2, enables more efficient power management and an even more stable connection, especially in busy environments with lots of wireless devices.

  • Colours. AirPods Max and AirPods Max 2 are available in the same 5 colours: Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple and Orange.
  • Battery life up to 20 hours. Both generations offer up to 20 hours of listening time with active noise cancellation enabled, so you can get through a full day on a single charge.
