On 2 February 2026, Apple introduced the successor to the iPhone 16e: the iPhone 17e. On this page, we compare both models so you can easily find out which one suits you best.

What is the difference between the iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e?

In addition to the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 models, Apple also offers a range of entry-level devices: the iPhone e variants. These models are ideal if you want to enjoy a good camera, nice design and powerful chip without immediately opting for the most expensive iPhone. The iPhone 17e and 16e are very similar in terms of dimensions, camera, battery and design. The chip, however, gets a significant upgrade. Which camera is better: the iPhone 16e or 17e?

Apple has changed little about the cameras: both models have a 48 MP Fusion camera on the back that takes very high-resolution photos, records 4K videos and offers up to 2x optical and 10x digital zoom. The specifications remain the same, but thanks to the new chip, the iPhone 17e processes your photos and videos better. You’ll notice this in improved HDR rendering of skin tones.

The design of the iPhone 17e and 16e compared

Apple has mainly kept the design the same: both the iPhone 17e and 16e have an aluminium frame, a glass back and a 6.1‑inch Super Retina XDR display that feels comfortable in the hand. However, the iPhone 17e gets an upgrade with Ceramic Shield 2, which makes the screen up to 3 times more scratch-resistant than that of the iPhone 16e. The iPhone 17e comes in 3 matte colours (black, white and soft pink), while the iPhone 16e has a housing made from 85% recycled aluminium, is protected by the earlier Ceramic Shield and is only available in black and white.

Apple has given the iPhone 17e a major upgrade when it comes to the chip: the new A19 chip (which is also used in the other iPhone 17 models) and the faster C1X modem make the phone more powerful and faster than the iPhone 16e with its A18 chip and C1 modem. You’ll especially notice this when using more demanding apps, gaming and streaming. Battery life remains similar, as both models let you play videos for around 26 hours and charge to about 50% in half an hour with a 20W iPhone adapter. The iPhone 17e now also supports wireless charging via MagSafe. The iPhone 16e doesn’t support this and can only be charged using Qi wireless charging.

Our advice on the differences between the iPhone 17e and 16e

The iPhone 17e and 16e are both powerful entry-level models from Apple, but they differ in a few important ways. The biggest upgrade is in the chip: the iPhone 17e with the A19 chip runs faster and more smoothly. It processes photos and videos better with improved HDR rendering and keeps games running fluidly. The camera and battery life remain the same on both devices. While the iPhone 16e offers 3 storage options, the iPhone 17e has 2. On the other hand, the iPhone 17e is equipped with Ceramic Shield 2, which is up to 3 times more scratch-resistant than the screen of the iPhone 16e. Both iPhones support Apple Intelligence.
