Measuring the niche sizes of a built-in hob: how do you do it?

Luuk16 NOVEMBER 2025
A modern kitchen features a black gas stove, an orange, two apples, and two potted plants on a white countertop.

If you’re looking for a built-in hob for your new kitchen or replacing your old hob, first measure the niche sizes. This way, you’ll know which built-in hobs will fit your kitchen.

What is the niche size of a built-in hob?

A stainless steel gas cooktop with four burners and black grates sits on a white countertop. Silver knobs are on the right.

The niche size of a built-in hob is the space in your worktop where the hob will go. The niche is less wide and deep than the built-in hob itself, as it rests on the worktop. To find out whether your built-in induction hob or ceramic built-in hob will actually fit into the niche, measure the following:

  1. The niche depth
  2. The niche width
  3. The thickness of the worktop

Measure the niche depth

The niche depth is the distance from the back of the niche to the front. Measure it as follows:

  • Make sure your tape measure sits flush against the back of the niche.
  • Pull the tape straight to the front of the niche.
  • Note the niche depth in centimetres.

Measure the niche width

The niche width is the distance measured from left to right. Do this as follows:

  • Place the tape measure against the left side of the niche.
  • Pull the tape tight and level to the right side.
  • Note the number of centimetres. This is the niche width.

The most common niche width is 60 centimetres. There are also narrower versions (30 or 40 centimetres) and larger ones (75 centimetres). The largest built-in hobs have a niche width of 90 centimetres.

Thickness of the worktop

The thickness of a worktop determines whether a hob sits firmly in the niche. Is the worktop thinner than your built-in hob? Then there’s a chance the hob will sag if something heavy is placed on it. You can determine the exact thickness of the worktop in 2 ways:

  1. By accurately measuring the height of the worktop.
  2. By finding the smallest dimension on the installation drawing. This consists of two numbers.

Connecting a hob

Choosing a built-in hob that fits your niche is the first step; connecting a hob is a bit more complex. You’re dealing with the different phases of the hob, which require the correct sockets and plugs. We only recommend connecting a built-in hob yourself if your kitchen has the right connections or if you have extensive electrical knowledge.

With many built-in appliances, it matters whether you have an IKEA kitchen or not, as the niche sizes of IKEA kitchens can sometimes differ from others. However, this does not apply to built-in hobs. For IKEA kitchens too, you measure the niche depth, niche width and the thickness of the worktop yourself, and then choose a built-in hob that fits.
