To install your built-in dishwasher correctly, you need the right door system. With this door system, you attach the door of your new built-in dishwasher to your kitchen cabinet. Discover the 2 different types of door systems for your built-in dishwasher and which one suits your kitchen best.

Built-in dishwasher: door-on-door or sliding door?

Open dishwasher is full of dishes, inside white kitchen cabinets. On the counter are thermoses, a cup, and a fruit bowl.

To mount your built-in dishwasher to the front panel of your kitchen, you use a door-on-door system or a sliding-door system. Which system suits your kitchen best largely depends on the system used to mount the previous built-in dishwasher. Do you have a new kitchen? Then it hardly matters which door system you choose. We explain the 2 different door systems below.

Which built-in dishwasher should you choose?

Door-on-door

With the door-on-door system, the front panel of your kitchen is attached directly to the dishwasher door. With this system, both doors move as if they were a single door. The front panel therefore does not move separately from the dishwasher door when you open it. An advantage of this system is that you only need one hinge, which makes installation relatively simple.

Sliding door

The sliding-door system for your built-in dishwasher works with so-called guides. When you open the door of your built-in dishwasher, the front panel moves along these guides. The door and the panel are therefore not directly attached to each other but move in unison. An advantage of this system is that it’s widely used and can therefore be installed in virtually any kitchen.

Built-in dishwasher with a different door system

A kitchen features white cabinets, a grey countertop, a black gas stove, a stainless steel sink, and an open dishwasher.

Before buying a new built-in dishwasher, it’s important to check which door system is currently in your kitchen. It’s not always possible to switch door systems. In fact, we advise against it. In principle, you could switch from a sliding-door system to a door-on-door system, but it involves a lot of work. Switching from a door-on-door system to a sliding-door system is not possible at all. If your current built-in dishwasher is mounted with the sliding-door system, then buy a new dishwasher with the same system. The same applies to built-in dishwashers with the door-on-door system.

Determine the plinth height of the built-in dishwasher

The plinth height also plays a role when choosing the right door system. The plinth height is the difference between the bottom of your built-in dishwasher door and the floor.

If you have an IKEA kitchen, only fully integrated built-in dishwashers will fit. These include, for example, Miele dishwashers with a front panel. With integrated dishwashers, the controls are on the inside of the dishwasher. In addition, pay close attention to the niche dimensions of your built-in dishwasher and whether they match your IKEA kitchen.
