Which built-in appliances fit in an IKEA kitchen?

An IKEA kitchen is a popular choice for many households. But which built-in appliances actually fit? That depends on the type of IKEA kitchen you have. In this article, we explain which appliances are suitable and what to look out for when choosing the right ones.

Which IKEA kitchens are there?

IKEA has 5 kitchen systems, but only 3 are suitable for built-in appliances: METOD (since 2014), FAKTUM (before 2014), and ENHET (since 2020). The other 2 – SUNNERSTA and KNOXHULT – are not designed for built-in appliances. METOD kitchens offer the most options for integration. FAKTUM is an older system still found in many homes but no longer sold. Installing modern appliances here can be tricky. ENHET works better with freestanding or semi-integrated appliances, as it's not designed for full integration using cabinet doors. To check which appliances will fit, it’s important to know the niche dimensions in your kitchen. This helps you choose appliances that suit your space.

In a METOD kitchen, IKEA fridges fit neatly into standard fridge cabinets (usually 60 cm wide). Built-in refrigerators and built-in freezers from other brands can also work, if they match the standard niche heights: 122, 158 or 178 cm. Not sure which niche size your built-in appliance has? Read here how to measure the niche size of a built-in fridge and the niche size of a built-in freezer. With FAKTUM kitchens, the cabinets are slightly different in size, often shorter or deeper. Building a built-in refrigerator here may require DIY adjustments to the IKEA door panel. It’s doable, but less ideal. ENHET kitchens are typically used with freestanding refrigerators and freezers. The only compatible door system for integration is door-on-door, which doesn’t work in ENHET.

Both IKEA and third-party built-in ovens and microwaves typically fit into a METOD kitchen, either in a high cabinet or a base unit. The standard niche size for a built-in oven and a built-in microwave is 60x60 cm. While installing a microwave or oven in FAKTUM, you might run into problems like misaligned fronts or exposed edges. DIY installation here is possible, but more demanding. ENHET kitchens are better suited for freestanding models.

Measure the sizes of a built-in oven or microwave

To install an electric hob, first measure the niche dimensions – width, depth and the thickness of your worktop (usually 2.8 or 3.8 cm). This applies to METOD, FAKTUM and ENHET kitchens. Carefully measure this together with the niche width and niche depth and then choose a built-in hob that fits in with this. If you’re getting a brand-new IKEA kitchen, they’ll cut the niche to match your hob’s size. That means nearly any model will fit.
