Which built-in fridges fit in an IKEA kitchen?

Are you looking for a new built-in fridge for your IKEA kitchen? Then be aware that not every built-in fridge fits in a kitchen from IKEA. Only fridges with a sliding door system fit in an IKEA kitchen. These are single-door fridges with 2 hinges. It’s also important to know which type of IKEA kitchen you have (METOD or FAKTUM) and which niche dimensions go with it.

What is a built-in fridge?

A built-in fridge fits exactly into the niche of your kitchen, allowing you to neatly integrate the appliance into the interior. To choose the right built-in fridge for your type of IKEA kitchen, the niche dimensions play an important role. If you bought an IKEA kitchen before 2014, you have a FAKTUM kitchen. All kitchens from after that period are of the METOD type. Both types of kitchens have different niche dimensions. Measure the depth, width and height of your IKEA kitchen and choose a fridge that fits into this. Note that you always need some space to place your fridge in the niche. So make sure that the dimensions of the fridge are smaller than the exact niche dimensions.

Flexible layout as you wish

A kitchen features white cabinets, countertops, a stainless steel mixer, and a bowl of fruit. A black refrigerator stands nearby.

The convenient thing about IKEA kitchens is that you can easily combine different cabinets with each other. For example, there are base units, corner units and wall units, allowing you to design the kitchen exactly as you wish. With the tall built-in cabinets from IKEA, you can also choose to place a fridge on top of a freezer, so that you create your own fridge-freezer combination. The flexible layout is one of the major advantages of an IKEA kitchen.

This is how to install a built-in fridge in the different types of IKEA kitchens

To install a built-in fridge in both a FAKTUM and a METOD kitchen, follow these 5 steps:

  1. Place the built-in fridge in the niche. Make sure that the fridge fits properly in the cabinet, is level, and that there is sufficient space for ventilation. You can achieve this last point by placing a ventilated shelf under the fridge. You can buy this at IKEA.
  2. Mark the fixing holes on the cabinet. Use a spirit level to make sure the holes are straight. Certainly also consult the installation manual if you feel this isn’t working out.
  3. Drill the fixing holes in the niche. Use a screwdriver to secure the fridge to the cabinet.
  4. Connect the fridge to the mains. Make sure that the plug is in an earthed socket.
  5. Set the fridge. Follow the instructions in the fridge manual. Important tip: when you install a fridge – just like when you move a fridge – it’s sensible to wait 24 hours before switching it on.
