Which freestanding fridge should you choose?

Do you need a new fridge? We're happy to help you choose the right one and have listed the different types for you.

Table-top fridge

Open white refrigerator filled with food items like eggs, juice, and fruit on shelves.

A table-top model is approximately 85 centimetres high and 45 to 60 centimetres wide. With an average capacity of 100 to 150 litres, it offers enough storage for households of 1 or 2 people. Table-top models are available with and without a freezer compartment. Most table-top fridges can be installed under a counter without a worktop, making them suitable for smaller kitchens. Of course, any table-top model can be used as a freestanding fridge. An added benefit when used freestanding: the top can serve as a work surface, for example to place appliances on.

Pros and cons of table-top fridges

+ Compact
+ Most table-top models can be installed as built-in or used freestanding
- Relatively limited capacity

Bar fridge

Open mini fridge with green grapes, pickles and a water bottle on shelves against a white background.

Like the table-top model, the bar fridge is a smart solution for small spaces, such as an office or student room. It’s often used as a minibar in hotel rooms and is also called a mini fridge or auxiliary fridge. The size and capacity can vary considerably but is usually between 40 and 50 litres. This equates to a few bottles of drinks and small food items such as snacks. Less capacity, but more space in the room. Some bar fridges also feature a freezer compartment.

Pros and cons of bar fridges

+ Very compact
+ Suitable for offices
- Limited capacity

Fridge freezer

A silver fridge-freezer is shown with the top door and bottom freezer door open, revealing empty shelves and drawers inside.

A fridge freezer combines a fridge compartment with a separate freezer compartment. The freezer section, consisting of freezer drawers, is located at the bottom because you use it less often. Both the fridge and freezer compartments have their own doors. Some fridge freezers have 2 thermostats, allowing you to set the temperature of each section independently.

Pros and cons of fridge freezers

+ Freezer with drawers, easy to organise
+ Sections sometimes separately adjustable
- More expensive than a double-door fridge

Double-door fridge

Open, side-by-side refrigerator with shelves full of food items. Left side contains frozen food, right side has fruits and drinks.

A double-door fridge has a separate freezer compartment which, unlike a fridge freezer, is located above the fridge section. This freezer is generally smaller than that of a fridge freezer. A double-door model is simpler but therefore also cheaper. It’s often purchased together with a microwave or oven that can be placed on top of the fridge.

Pros and cons of double-door fridges

+ Suitable for placing a microwave/oven on top
+ Cheaper than a fridge freezer
- Simpler than a fridge freezer

Tall larder fridge

A white refrigerator is open, revealing shelves stocked with an assortment of food and drink items.

A tall larder fridge is the solution for those who want lots of fridge space. You can store many food items because you have extra space that would otherwise be taken up by a freezer section. It’s often possible to find a matching-design freezer to pair with a tall larder fridge.

Pros and cons of tall larder fridges

+ Large fridge capacity
+ Matching freezer often available
+ Plenty of space for opened cartons of dairy and bottles of drinks
- Buying a separate freezer takes up more space than choosing a fridge freezer

American fridge

Open white refrigerator with gray trim shows shelves filled with food, drinks, and condiments. Drawers are on the bottom.

The ever-growing popularity of American fridges is easy to understand. They offer great convenience thanks to their large capacity and the ability to have chilled water and ice cubes available at any time. Many American fridges, also called side-by-side fridges, have a water and ice dispenser. The water supply is usually connected to the mains, though some models have a reservoir that must be filled manually. Another hallmark of a side-by-side is that the fridge and freezer sections are placed next to each other.

Pros and cons of American fridges

+ Often with water and ice dispenser
+ Fridge and freezer sections are NoFrost
+ Large capacity
- May not fit every home due to size

Wine fridge

A tall, metal-framed wine refrigerator stands against a white background, showcasing several shelves filled with various wine bottles.

True wine connoisseurs store their wine at exactly the right temperature. Wine lovers can now enjoy perfectly tempered wines at home thanks to proper storage techniques. The wine fridge, suitable for both red and white wine, regulates this precisely. You can usually set the temperature from 4 to 18 degrees. Some models even have separately adjustable temperature zones. Another option besides a wine fridge is a wine storage cabinet, which mimics a wine cellar, so all wine is kept at one consistent temperature.

Pros and cons of wine fridges

+ Enjoy wine at the optimal temperature
+ For red and white wine
- Only for wine

Energy label

The image shows an energy label for a refrigerator and freezer, with an energy efficiency scale from green to red. Text is in Dutch.

A fridge uses electricity day and night. So, here’s what the energy label tells you. In the Netherlands, fridges have an energy label between A and D. The energy label of fridges and freezers indicates how many kWh the appliance consumes per year. The ‘milk carton’ symbol shows the fridge’s capacity in litres. The number of stars indicates the freezer’s capability. 4 stars means the freezer can freeze liquid water into an ice cube. The noise level is indicated in decibels.

Noise level

A person holds a hand near an ear, suggesting listening or hearing, set against a light blue background.

When the fridge is placed in a living space, or a freezer near a bedroom, noise level is very important. As mentioned, the noise level is stated in dB. Every 3 dB difference is roughly a halving or doubling of perceived sound. Fridges with an inverter motor are quieter than conventional fridges. Unlike a traditional compressor, an inverter motor runs continuously to keep the temperature cold inside the fridge. The benefits are lower energy consumption and a constant soft sound instead of a noise that starts and stops suddenly.
