Connecting a cooker: how do you do it?

To connect a new cooker yourself, you need sufficient knowledge of gas and electrics. Don’t have any? Then we strongly recommend using MediaMarkt’s installation service. Our professionals will install the new cooker for you. Do you already know enough about phase connections, Perilex sockets and comfort fittings? Then we’ll help you get started with connecting your cooker.

How do you connect a cooker yourself?

Two people are assembling a kitchen. One person holds instructions while the other uses a drill near a silver oven.

Only connect a cooker yourself if you have enough understanding of electrical or gas connections. Without sufficient knowledge, installing a cooker yourself can be dangerous. Especially with an electric cooker, it’s important that you have the correct connection and sockets. For every electric cooker, such as an induction or ceramic cooker, you need a so‑called 5‑pin Perilex connection. This is a socket with 5 holes. An electric cooker demands more power than a normal socket provides. First check whether your kitchen has a Perilex socket. This isn’t always the case.

2-phase or 3-phase cookers

When connecting an electric cooker, check whether you need a 2‑ or 3‑phase Perilex connection. This depends on your cooker’s power. A 2‑phase cooker typically has around 7,000 watts of power, while a 3‑phase cooker is around 10,000 watts. To handle this power, your consumer unit also needs the right circuits. Most Dutch households have a so‑called “cooking group”. This group is required to operate a 2‑phase cooker properly. For a 3‑phase cooker, your consumer unit needs three‑phase power, something many households in the Netherlands don’t have a separate group for. Your consumer unit will need to be modified. Always call in an electrician for this.

Which cooker will you choose?

There are 2 types of electric cookers: induction and ceramic. This mainly refers to the hob. An induction hob heats pans directly via magnetic fields. This is fast and efficient. A ceramic hob uses electric heating elements beneath a glass surface. To connect your electric cooker, it’s crucial to know how many phases it requires and whether your Perilex connection supports this. If you’re certain about this, you can follow the steps below to connect your electric cooker.

Connecting an induction or ceramic cooker

  1. Switch off the fuse in the consumer unit.
  2. Remove the cover plate and the screws from the connection point.
  3. Connect the cooker’s wires correctly to the Perilex socket terminals.
  4. Replace the cover plate.
  5. Test the cooker thoroughly before you start cooking.

Connecting a gas cooker

Do you have a gas cooker? Follow these steps to connect it safely and correctly:

  1. Turn off the gas supply. This is in your kitchen.
  2. Wrap the thread at the end of the cooker’s gas connection with several layers of special gas tape.
  3. Using an open‑ended spanner, tighten the comfort fitting securely without forcing it.
  4. Fit the gas hose to the cooker. This must be a stainless‑steel hose and there must be a rubber ring in the hose. Check this first.
  5. Check whether the gas hose is properly connected by carefully brushing the connections with soapy water. Then open the gas tap and check for bubbles. Hopefully none appear, which means everything is connected correctly.
  6. For safety, close the gas tap again before plugging the cooker into the Perilex socket. Once everything is connected, open the gas supply again.

Connecting either an electric or gas cooker can be tricky, especially if you lack experience or knowledge. If possible, we recommend using MediaMarkt’s installation service. Still going to do it yourself? Then carefully check which connections your cooker needs and whether your socket and consumer‑unit circuits can support them.
