Handheld vacuums, also known as mini vacuums, are less suitable for people with allergies and for households with pets. They don’t pick up pet hairs and dust powerfully enough to remove everything thoroughly. In addition, you mainly use a handheld vacuum for small cleaning jobs, so you won’t make an entire room free of dust and pet hair.

If you choose a stick or 2‑in‑1 vacuum, you can use the right filters (such as a HEPA filter) to minimise symptoms related to dust allergies as much as possible.

Almost all stick, 2‑in‑1 and handheld vacuums run on a rechargeable battery, so you’re not tied to a power cord. You can also use different accessories and brushes to clean your home even more thoroughly.

Stick vacuum cleaner

The stick vacuum cleaner is designed for vacuuming floor surfaces. Because the motor is built into the handle, the stick vacuum is extra manoeuvrable. Its light weight and compact size also make it easy to reach everywhere – ideal when you want to give the floor a quick clean. Depending on the design of the stick vacuum, you can also use it to clean your ceilings and/or stairs. Another advantage if you have limited space: thanks to its compact size, a stick vacuum takes up very little storage room.

Pros and cons of a stick vacuum cleaner:
+ Compact
+ Manoeuvrable
- Small dust container

Handheld vacuum

For quick jobs, such as vacuuming crumbs from the sofa or table, there’s the handheld vacuum: a compact, rechargeable vacuum cleaner.

Pros and cons of a handheld vacuum:
+ Compact
+ Rechargeable, so no power cord
- Small dust container
- Limited battery life

2‑in‑1 stick vacuum cleaner

The 2‑in‑1 stick vacuum combines the advantages of a handheld vacuum and a stick vacuum. These 2‑in‑1 models are versatile and can be used for both small and large cleaning jobs.

Pros and cons of a 2‑in‑1:
+ All the benefits of a stick vacuum and a handheld vacuum in one
+ Rechargeable, so no power cord
- Small dust container
- Limited battery life

Our advice on comparing different compact vacuum cleaners

A black cordless vacuum stands upright in a tidy living room, positioned beside a green sideboard, magazines and potted plants.

A stick vacuum runs on a battery and is used for larger cleaning jobs. Most stick vacuums last around 60 minutes on a full charge. Do you mainly want to pick up small crumbs and dust, for example in the kitchen? Then a handheld vacuum is the best choice. If you want to tackle both large and small cleaning tasks and combine the power of a stick vacuum with the convenience of a handheld, go for a 2‑in‑1 stick vacuum.
