Pokémon is a global phenomenon that began as a video game in 1996 and has grown into one of the most popular franchises ever. Players catch, train and battle with unique Pokémon to become champion and complete the Pokédex. Alongside games such as Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Pokémon GO and the latest Nintendo Switch titles like Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Pokémon also includes a popular trading card game, an animated series and movies. The franchise has a huge community and organises tournaments and events all over the world. Pokémon continues to inspire new generations of fans. Whether you’re into the games, the cards or the series, Pokémon brings millions of people together in an adventurous and magical world.

What is Pokémon Day?

Yellow Pokémon character jumps from a bold red 30 and a Poké Ball on a bright yellow background, with the caption “Pokémon: Since 1996”.

Pokémon Day is an annual event that celebrates the launch of the first Pokémon game on 27 February 1996. This year, Pokémon Day is extra special, as Pokémon is celebrating its 30th anniversary. It’s a day when fans all over the world come together to celebrate the popular franchise and a great opportunity to connect with other enthusiastic players.

Pokémon Day is also the moment when The Pokémon Company uses the special ‘Pokémon Presents’ livestream to look ahead at what’s coming. In the past, new generations and spin‑offs have often been announced on this day, such as Pokémon Pokopia, a cosy game in which you build your own Pokémon world. This year also promises to be special: a brand‑new generation of Pokémon is expected and, although it hasn’t been officially announced yet, a special set of Pokémon cards in honour of 30 years of Pokémon. At MediaMarkt, we’re of course delighted to celebrate this day with something extra special.
