Ghost of Yōtei is the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, one of the most acclaimed open-world games in PlayStation Studios' portfolio. It tells a completely different story than Ghost of Tsushima, so you don't need to have played it to understand Ghost of Yōtei. The game focuses on action-packed combat with an arsenal of traditional Japanese weapons, stealthy ninja maneuvers, and immersing yourself in the beautiful natural surroundings. Ghost of Yōtei takes place around Mount Yōtei in Ezo, present-day Hokkaido, Japan.

What is the story of Ghost of Yōtei?

In Ghost of Tsushima, you played as Jin Sakai, tasked with liberating Tsushima Island from Mongol invaders. The sequel leaves Jin's island behind and takes place nearly 330 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, in a completely different part of feudal Japan in the year 1603.

This time, you play as Atsu, a wandering ronin bent on revenge. After the Yõtei Six wiped out her family 16 years ago and left her for dead, she has only one goal: to find and kill the perpetrators. To this end, she roams the area around Mount Yõtei to track down and systematically eliminate the six perpetrators. You'll also regularly encounter interesting locations, such as Hot Springs and Altars of Reflection, where Atsu can acquire new abilities.

Beyond the story, there's plenty to do in the new region. Like the previous installment, Ghost of Yõtei is packed with side adventures that you explore using the new Clue system to progress. Player freedom is key, giving you complete freedom in which locations you explore first and how you explore them. Atsu can interrogate people to gather information that might lead her to snow-capped mountains, for example, or perhaps even a burned-down village.

The combat system is also getting a makeover, as Atsu has an arsenal of weapons to use in addition to her traditional katana. Like Naoe in Assassin's Creed Shadows, she has a kusarigama, but Atsu also has a spear and even two swords to cut enemies short. Each type of enemy has its own weaknesses, so switching weapons can be advantageous.

Developer Sucker Punch Productions prioritizes realism. This means that Ghost of Yõtei, like its predecessor, will feature the Kurosawa Mode. This mode transforms the game into black and white, a tribute to the beloved director Akira Kurosawa. And it doesn't stop there. There's also a Miiki Mode, which makes the game more bloody, a tribute to 12 Assassins director Takashi Miiki. Finally, there's a Watanabe Mode, which transforms the music while exploring Ezo with lo-fi beats.
