How do you use a curling iron?

A curling iron is an electric hairstyling tool used to curl your hair. On this page, you’ll discover how a curling wand works, how to create different types of curls with it – from beach waves to tight curls and Hollywood waves – and what to pay attention to when using a curling iron.

How does a curling iron work?

A curling iron uses heat to temporarily change the shape of dry hair. The heat breaks the hydrogen bonds in your hair, while the cylindrical barrel shapes it into a curl. Once your hair cools down, the hydrogen bonds reform in that curled shape, so the curl stays in place until your hair comes into contact with water or heat again. Because a curling iron operates at high temperatures, it’s important to pay close attention to the temperature you use.

Pay close attention to the temperature of your curling iron

The temperature of your curling iron plays a major role in how healthy your hair remains and how long your curls last. If the iron is too hot, you risk drying out your hair, causing split ends and even breakage. If the temperature is too low, your curls will often drop out quickly.

As a general guideline, these are the recommended temperatures for different hair types:

  • Fine, thin, damaged or coloured hair: 120 °C to 160 °C
  • Normal (undamaged) hair: 170 °C to 190 °C
  • Thick or coarse hair: 190 °C to 230 °C

How to curl your hair with a curling iron in 5 simple steps:

  • Make sure your hair is completely dry. Never use a curling iron on damp hair. The heat can scorch your hair and cause extra damage.
  • Section your hair. Use clips to divide your hair into several sections. This helps you work neatly and ensures each strand gets equal attention.
  • Protect your hair from the heat. Apply a heat protection spray or serum throughout your hair. This helps prevent dryness and breakage caused by the high temperature of the curling iron.

  • Curl your hair section by section. Start with the bottom sections. Take a strand of about 2 to 3 centimetres at a time and wrap it around the curling iron. Hold for 10 to 15 seconds, then gently slide the curl off the barrel.
  • Add the finishing touch to your curls. Wrap each fresh curl around your finger or a roller and secure it with a clip until it has cooled down. This helps the curl hold its shape better. Then remove all the clips and set your curls with a light hairspray or shine spray.

Different curling techniques

The simplest technique is to curl your hair away from your face for an open, blow‑out‑style look, and towards your face for full, classic curls. Many curling irons come with multiple barrels or attachments in different sizes. Each one creates a different type of curl: the larger the barrel, the looser and softer the curl; the smaller the barrel, the tighter and more defined the curls. There are also specific techniques for styles such as beach waves, tight curls and Hollywood waves. These are done slightly different from standard curls. Below, we’ll explain step by step how to create each style.

Creating beach waves

Creating beach waves with a curling iron requires a different technique than when you’re going for classic curls. Follow these steps:

  • Start with dry, protected hair. Make sure your hair is completely dry, spray a heat protectant over your entire head, and divide your hair into a top and bottom section.
  • Curl the bottom section without the ends. Begin with the bottom section and take a strand of hair. Hold the curling iron slightly away from your head and wrap the strand around the barrel. Leave the ends out so they stay straight and don’t curl along.
  • Release the curl gently. Keep the strand wrapped around the curling iron for about 10 seconds, then gently let the curl drop.

  • Alternate the direction of the curls. Take a new strand and wrap it in the opposite direction to the previous curl: if one curl is wrapped away from your face, wrap the next one towards your face (or the other way round).
  • Repeat until all your hair is curled. Work through all the strands in the bottom section first, then move on to the top section.
  • Finish the look. If you like, apply a sea salt spray or texturizing spray for extra body and definition. Loosen your hair with your fingers, and your beach waves are ready.

Creating tight curls

You can create tight curls by combining the right curling iron with the right technique. For full, tight curls, choose a curling iron with a barrel diameter of around 19 to 25 millimetres. If you want very small, compact curls, opt for an even slimmer barrel, for example under 14 millimetres. Then follow these steps:

  • Start with dry, protected hair. Make sure your hair is completely dry and apply a heat protection spray or serum throughout your hair.
  • Section your hair. Divide your hair into several layers and start with the bottom section. This helps you work in an organised way and ensures you don’t miss any strands.
  • Curl from the roots. Take a strand of hair and place the curling iron close to the roots. Carefully wrap the strand around the barrel and hold it for about 10 seconds. Then gently slide the curl off the iron.
  • Repeat until all your hair is curled. Work through each section and strand in the same way until all of your hair is curled.
  • Let your curls cool and set them. Allow all curls to cool down completely, then gently run your fingers through them for a more natural look. Finish with a hairspray to help them hold their shape all day.

Creating Hollywood waves

Hollywood waves have been a red-carpet favourite for years. These glamorous waves are popular with brides, but they’re also perfect for parties and special occasions. You can create Hollywood waves with a curling iron by following these steps:

  • Protect and dry your hair. Make sure your hair is completely dry and apply a heat protectant throughout. Divide your hair into a bottom and top section.
  • Curl every section in the same direction. Hold the curling iron horizontally, with the tip slightly pointing down, and start at the back of the bottom section. Take a strand of hair and curl it downwards with the horizontally held curling iron. Hold for about 10 seconds, then carefully roll the curl off the barrel. Curl all strands in the same direction.

  • Pin each curl in place. Wrap the fresh curl back around your finger and secure it with a clip.
  • Repeat for all sections. Continue curling and pinning until you’ve worked through all of your hair.
  • Release and set the waves. Once all curls have cooled, remove the clips. Gently brush through your hair with a wide-toothed comb to create soft, flowing waves. Finish with hairspray, misting it horizontally over the waves to help them keep their shape.

Can you use a curling iron on wet hair?

Never use a curling iron on wet hair. The heat can cause the moisture inside your hair to boil, burning the hair and causing serious damage. This can lead to:

  • Split ends
  • Dryness
  • Rough, dull hair
  • Hair breakage
  • Curls that fall out more quickly

You also risk damaging the curling iron itself. The water can cause rust to form on the metal barrel, and the protective coating on the curling iron may loosen or crack.
