F-1 World Grand Prix is a challenging racing simulation that puts you on the track at speeds exceeding 300 km/h with unprecedented realism on the Nintendo 64. You must get to know your car well and plan each race carefully if you don't want your racing career to end on the best circuits in the world, always last. F-1 World Grand Prix is officially licensed by F1 and features all 22 drivers from the 11 teams, authentic race cars, and exact replicas of 17 internationally renowned circuits. Some of the most legendary names in motorsport will appear, including Ferrari, McLaren, circuits like Silverstone, Monza, and Monaco, and racing legends such as Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard, and Damon Hill. But no team or driver is perfect enough to achieve pole position every time: even the excellent Williams team struggles with a mediocre pit crew. Developer Paradigm Entertainment made a name for itself with military flight simulations before collaborating with Nintendo on Pilotwings 64 and then joining forces with Video System in 1997 for AeroFighters Assault, a flight simulation with a story about an alien invasion. With F-1 World Grand Prix, Paradigm and Video System clearly demonstrated that they could combine raw realism with arcade action. The realism starts in the pits, where you tune your car to the circuit, the length of the race, and the weather conditions. For example, more fuel stops reduce the number of pit stops, but also the acceleration. Unlike other racing games, braking in WGP is a crucial tactical element. If you are brave enough to shift gears manually, you will learn – probably the hard way – that these extremely precise cars do not forgive clumsy gear changes. On the track, the action unfolds at speeds exceeding 400 km/h with incredible realism. The developers have managed to keep the graphics consistently smooth, despite the detailed cars. Attentive drivers can deduce important information from small details, such as sparks at the rear of a car when it accelerates or downshifts. WGP has three difficulty levels: Beginner, Professional, and Champion – the latter is particularly challenging. At higher difficulty levels, the AI of the drivers improves significantly, and the car handling becomes even more realistic. The global Grand Prix mode includes 17 circuits across four continents, starting with the palm-lined Albert Park in Australia and ending with the Grand Prix of Europe in Spain. In between, players must conquer the tight corners of Interlagos in Brazil, the long straights of Montreal in Canada, the treacherous hairpin bends of the Nürburgring during the Grand Prix of Luxembourg, and the dangerous kerbstones of Suzuka in Japan. However, the biggest challenge is undoubtedly the legendary circuit of Monaco, Monte Carlo, a tight track that winds through the streets of the port city and demands the utmost from every driver. In Challenge Mode, preparations are skipped, and you dive directly into the exciting 1997 season. In Attack scenarios, your goal is to get through the field as quickly as possible. In Defense scenarios, you must constantly keep an eye on your rearview mirrors to prevent other cars from overtaking you. However, the most demanding scenarios are the Difficulty scenarios, in which you face engine problems, wet circuits, and other dangerous situations. And if you excel in the 15 challenges, you can unlock the ultimate challenge. With so many options and details, F-1 World Grand Prix is definitely a racing game destined for the top.
