Liberty is set in Tanzania in the late eighties and tells the story of two Scandinavian expat families who dream of changing the world. They soon discover that good intentions are not enough to realize their ideals. The miniseries paints a painful portrait of the naivety of a group of foreign aid workers, whose grand plans clash with local resistance and insurmountable cultural differences. Kirsten Knudsen's dream of working as a nurse in the Third World finally comes true. With her baby and teenage son, she moves from Denmark to Africa, where her husband already works. There she also awaits a ready-made lifestyle, complete with staff and a richly gin-tonic provided Scandinavian community. It seems like paradise, but at a price. She soon learns the downside of this tropical idyll. The new life in Tanzania offers her many opportunities, but the consequences are severe: corruption, infidelity and immoral choices that ultimately come at the expense of relationships and families. Liberty is based on the eponymous, successful novel by Jakob Ejersbro about his childhood experiences as a Danish expat in Africa.
