Is a music documentary about the dramatic life of the legendary Surinamese folk singer Lieve Hugo (IKO for friends and family). His life is inextricably linked to the development of traditional Surinamese dance music, kaseko to pop music. In addition to the stories and anecdotes of family and old fellow musicians, the maker follows the efforts of Dutch and Surinamese pop icons in Suriname to make Lieve Hugo's music their own, with the help of local kaseko 'masters'. Their efforts culminate in a 'grande finale' with the Metropole Orchestra in the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, where Lieve Hugo once gave a dazzling performance with the renowned Orchestra Washboard during the closing of the Holland Festival in 1970. Lieve Hugo dies ten days before the independence of Suriname, which he fervently sang about, in November 1975 and receives a 'state funeral'. His music is still alive and well decades later and determines the atmosphere at every party. The Kaseko Crossover Concert was performed once on April 10, 2008 in the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam. The concert consists of interpretations of newly arranged kaseko songs by the legendary musician Lieve Hugo by Dutch and Surinamese pop icons. Lieve Hugo is, partly due to his great influence on the development of Kaseko, the uncrowned king of this typical, exuberant Surinamese music style.
