With a lens hood, you prevent too much sunlight from entering your lens. When photographing in bright sunlight, the reflection in your lens can overexpose your photos. Backlight also causes lens flare in your photos. A lens hood counteracts this. A lens hood blocks light in the right places without the lens hood being visible in your photos. A lens hood also offers protection for your front lens.
