Hertz, refresh rate and frame rate are often used interchangeably, which is nice and simple. Refresh rate means how quickly the image refreshes within one second – so how many images you see per second. This number is expressed in hertz. A refresh rate of 50 Hz means 50 images per second. A refresh rate of 100 Hz means 100 images per second. The higher the hertz, the smoother the image. Easy, right? Now you might wonder: if a screen has a refresh rate of 100 Hz, do I really see 100 images per second? You’d think so, but it depends heavily on the film, game or series you’re watching at that moment. If the source (the programme or game you’re watching) has a lower number of frames per second, you won’t see 100 images per second, even if your screen can handle it.
