What is hertz (Hz) and how many hertz should your TV have?

If you start comparing TVs or monitors for gaming, you’ll definitely come across the term hertz (Hz). In this article you’ll read exactly what hertz is, and whether you should buy a TV or screen with 50 Hz, 100 Hz or more.

What is hertz (Hz), also known as refresh rate?

Hertz, refresh rate and frame rate are often used interchangeably, which is nice and simple. Refresh rate means how quickly the image refreshes within one second – so how many images you see per second. This number is expressed in hertz. A refresh rate of 50 Hz means 50 images per second. A refresh rate of 100 Hz means 100 images per second. The higher the hertz, the smoother the image. Easy, right? Now you might wonder: if a screen has a refresh rate of 100 Hz, do I really see 100 images per second? You’d think so, but it depends heavily on the film, game or series you’re watching at that moment. If the source (the programme or game you’re watching) has a lower number of frames per second, you won’t see 100 images per second, even if your screen can handle it.

How many hertz are minimally needed for smooth images?

How many hertz do you need at least for smooth motion? That depends on what you’re watching. If you want to follow very detailed fast movements, such as tennis matches, Formula 1, action films and fast-paced games, then a 100 hertz TV is very nice. If you mainly watch programmes such as sitcoms, romcoms, news, current affairs and talk shows, then a 50 hertz TV is sufficient.

Is the difference between 50 and 100 Hz noticeable on a TV?

A person watches a soccer game on TV in a living room. A lamp illuminates the scene. A game controller is on a table.

You’ll mainly notice this difference when watching action scenes on a TV with too low a refresh rate. For example, if you watch a football final on a 50 hertz TV, you might see judder or a white trail behind the ball. You’ll miss many details of the action and that affects the experience. There are also TVs with an even higher refresh rate, for example 200 hertz.

Is a higher refresh rate always better?

A higher refresh rate also comes with a higher price tag. This isn’t only due to the number of hertz, but also because TVs with more hertz are often larger and higher quality. Don’t watch sport and action films? Or don’t you mind a bit of judder when watching the latest Mission Impossible or a cup final? Or are you simply looking for a small TV rather than a very large one? Then a 50 hertz television will do just fine.

How many Hz do you need for gaming?

A child in a red shirt plays a video game with a white controller. A flat screen shows two figures fighting on a gray paneled wall.

When gaming there’s no time to lose, and judder can be pretty annoying. You’ll notice this especially if the TV’s refresh rate is too low. To game smoothly, choose a TV with a refresh rate of at least 60 hertz. Do you play games with lightning-fast action? Then choose a refresh rate of 120 Hz or higher. Or better yet: go for a real gaming TV.

What else should you look out for when buying a TV?

When buying a new TV, there are more things to pay attention to. For example the size, sound quality, resolution, panel technology (LED, OLED, QLED), smart features such as voice control, and much more.
