Even without a Chromecast, you can easily stream content to your TV. Many smart TVs already have apps like Netflix, Videoland or YouTube pre-installed, allowing you to watch directly on the television. In addition, you can stream wirelessly via Apple TV or other media players such as NVIDIA Shield TV and Amazon Fire TV Stick.

For both the NVIDIA Shield TV and the Amazon Fire TV Stick, follow these steps:

  1. Connect the media player to an HDMI port on your TV.
  2. Set your TV to the correct HDMI input.
  3. Follow the on-screen steps to connect the media player to Wi-Fi.
  4. Sign in with your Google account (NVIDIA) or Amazon account (Fire TV Stick).
  5. Download the streaming apps you want, such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ or YouTube.

  2. Open the app or video you want to play on your phone.
  3. Tap the AirPlay icon (a square or circle with a small triangle underneath).
    • If the icon doesn’t appear, swipe down from the top-right corner to open the Control Center and select ‘Screen Mirroring’.
  4. Select your Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible smart TV.
  5. Confirm the connection (sometimes the TV will ask you to enter a code).
  6. Your iPhone will now stream directly to the TV.

Troubleshooting streaming to your TV

Sometimes streaming to your TV may not work right away. Your TV might not receive a signal, or there could be network issues. You can resolve these problems with a few simple steps.

What to do if your TV shows no signal

Sometimes streaming doesn’t work immediately, and your TV may display ‘No Signal.’ This usually means the TV isn’t recognising the correct input signal.

Fortunately, you can often fix this easily:

  1. Check the HDMI input
    • Use your TV remote and press the Source or Input button.
    • Select the correct HDMI port where your Chromecast, Apple TV, or media player is connected.
  2. Check the connections
    • Make sure the HDMI cable is firmly connected to both the TV and the device.
    • If your device has a separate power cable (Chromecast or Amazon Fire TV), ensure it’s receiving power.
  3. Try a different HDMI port or cable
    • Connect the device to another HDMI port on the TV.
    • If necessary, use a different HDMI cable.
  4. Check the Wi-Fi connection (for wireless streaming)
    • Make sure both your phone/tablet and the media player or smart TV are connected to the same network.

If you still don’t get a picture after these steps, the issue may be with the TV itself or the device you’re trying to cast from.

Fixing connection and network issues

Your internet connection plays a key role when streaming. If the stream stutters, freezes, or won’t start at all, it’s often due to network issues.

You can resolve this quickly with a few simple steps:

  1. Check the Wi-Fi connection
    • Make sure your phone, laptop, and TV or media player are all connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Restart the router
    • Unplug the router for 30 seconds.
    • Plug it back in and wait until all the indicator lights are on.
  3. Move devices closer to the router
    • Place your TV or media player as close to the router as possible.
    • Reduce interference from walls or other devices (like wireless speakers).
  4. Use a wired connection if possible
    • Connect your TV or media player directly to the router. This provides a more stable connection than Wi-Fi.
  5. Check for updates
    • Update your router, phone, TV, or media player. Updates often fix connectivity issues and bugs.

If the problem persists, contact your internet provider for further assistance.
