Nespresso or Senseo: what’s the difference?

Luuk25 JUNE 2026
Two coffee machines are shown in a kitchen scene: a capsule machine with a cup on the left, and a filter brewer with a glass jug on the right.

Are you deciding between a Nespresso and a Senseo? Both coffee machines have their own advantages. Nespresso is known for its intense coffee flavour and premium features, while Senseo is especially popular with fans of mild filter coffee and convenience. On this page, we compare the main differences, so you can easily choose which machine suits you best.

The difference between Nespresso and Senseo, explained briefly

A black Philips coffee machine stands on the worktop, with three cups of coffee in front and a warm kitchen with fruit in the background.

These are the main differences between Nespresso and Senseo:

  • Nespresso uses capsules, while Senseo uses pads.
  • Nespresso delivers a full and strong coffee flavour, while Senseo offers a mild cup of filter coffee.
  • With Nespresso, you can set the amount of water yourself and sometimes also the temperature, while with Senseo this isn't possible.
  • Some Nespresso models include an integrated milk frother, while Senseo often doesn't.
  • With Senseo, you can make 2 cups of coffee at the same time, while Nespresso only makes 1 cup at a time.
  • Both machines need to be descaled, but with Nespresso, this only needs to be done once every 3 months, while with Senseo it's every 1 to 3 months.

Which coffee machine should you choose?

To choose between Nespresso and Senseo, pay attention to the following points:

  • Whether you prefer capsules or pads.
  • The coffee flavour.
  • The different functions and models.
  • How many cups of coffee you want to make.
  • Whether you want a milk frother or not.
  • Maintenance.

Nespresso capsules vs Senseo pads

One of the biggest differences between the 2 machines is the type of coffee they use. Nespresso machines use aluminium or plastic capsules, while Senseo uses soft coffee pads made from filter paper. Both coffee formats are sustainable: the capsules can be recycled and the pads are biodegradable.

Pump pressure and coffee flavour

Another difference between the 2 coffee machines is the pump pressure. A Nespresso machine has a higher pump pressure compared with a Senseo machine. This pressure forces hot water through the capsules, allowing all the oils and flavours in the coffee to be released properly, so you can enjoy a strong espresso. With a coffee pad machine, this pressure is much lower, which means you're more likely to get traditional filter coffee.

Nespresso coffee is also customisable: you can adjust the amount of water for each cup of coffee, and with most models you can also set the temperature. With Senseo, you usually only have the choice between a small or large cup of coffee.

Different versions

Both Nespresso and Senseo offer several versions. For example, there are capsule machines with more premium features such as a milk frother, as well as machines for larger coffees. Nespresso machines are also sold by different brands, while Senseo is exclusively made by Philips.

Number of cups

Do you like making several cups of coffee at once? Then a Senseo machine is a good choice. With Senseo, you can make 2 cups at the same time, which is very handy if you often have visitors. With a Nespresso machine, you can only make 1 cup of coffee at a time. That means it takes longer to make coffee for a larger group, but you do get a stronger coffee flavour in return.

With or without a milk frother

One advantage of Nespresso is that some models have an integrated milk frother. This makes it easy to prepare your own cappuccino or latte macchiato. Senseo machines usually don't have this feature. If you want to make milk-based coffees, you'll need a separate milk frother.

Maintenance

To enjoy tasty coffee for as long as possible, you need to maintain your coffee machine properly. With a Nespresso machine, this means rinsing the machine daily, emptying and cleaning the water tank and drip tray weekly with a little dish soap, and descaling it about every 3 months. With a Senseo machine, you should remove the pad holder from the machine every week to clean it, as the holes in the centre can become blocked. You should also rinse the water tank weekly and descale the machine every 1 to 3 months.

Our advice on the difference between Senseo and Nespresso

A black coffee machine brews two cups on a wooden table, with extra glasses, white bags and a warm, homely background behind it.

Nespresso and Senseo both compete in the world of coffee, but each focuses on a different type of user. With a Nespresso machine, you can make coffee with a powerful, intense flavour and choose the amount of water yourself. With some models, you can also adjust the temperature and use a milk reservoir, making it easy to prepare a cappuccino as well.

Senseo is mainly aimed at people who enjoy mild filter coffee. The machines make coffee with a softer flavour and make it easy to prepare several cups quickly. Thanks to the option to make 2 cups at the same time, you can easily serve coffee to your guests.
