Descaling your Nespresso machine is important to maintain the quality of your coffee and extend the life of your machine. Limescale is a white deposit that is caused by minerals in the water. If you don’t descale your Nespresso machine regularly, the machine's pipes and pump will become clogged or damaged. With a bit of bad luck, for example, you will suffer from dirty, lukewarm coffee, a slow run-out or malfunctions.

Fortunately, descaling a Nespresso machine is not difficult. All you need is a special descaling agent. You use a descaling agent from Nespresso or from the machine in which you use the Nespresso capsules. You can then descale your appliance as follows:

  1. Turn off your Nespresso machine and remove any used cups or capsules.
  2. Fill the water tank with a mixture of water and descaling agent. Follow your machine's recommended descaling instructions for the correct dosage.
  3. Place a container or dish under the coffee spout that collects the liquid.
  4. Drain the reservoir completely. With most Nespresso machines, you do this by pressing both coffee buttons at the same time.
  5. Flush the reservoir 1 or 2 more times with clean tap water.

Can you descale a Nespresso machine with vinegar?

It’s unwise to use vinegar as a descaling agent for your Nespresso machine. Vinegar can damage the inside of your coffee maker. It affects the rubber parts and seals, which can cause your machine to leak. In addition, vinegar residues can give a nasty smell or taste to your freshly brewed coffee, even if you have rinsed a few times. So go for the right descaling agent to prevent problems and continue to enjoy delicious coffee.
