Comparing different types of tumble dryers helps you pick the best one. You can choose from a heat pump dryer, condenser dryer or air-vented dryer. Want to know which dryer is the most energy efficient? This article gives an overview of the current range. We compare all tumble dryers based on energy consumption, load capacity and price. That way, you’ll soon have a dryer with the right features running in your utility room.

Heat pump dryer: the energy efficient choice

A white washing machine with a silver door rim is in a laundry room. A green basket of clothes is on the floor near a closet.

This type of tumble dryer is by far the most popular. A heat pump dryer has a slightly higher purchase price, although that difference is almost negligible. It also uses significantly less energy than other tumble dryers. A heat pump dryer works in the same way as a condenser dryer, but instead of a heating element it uses an energy‑efficient heat pump. Compare the energy consumption of a heat pump dryer with that of a condenser dryer and you’ll find it’s up to 60% more economical. Here’s how it works: a heat pump dryer operates using a pump and refrigerant. This generates warm air which is then reused. A heat pump dryer dries your clothes at a low temperature. This makes it suitable for all fabrics, including delicate ones like silk and wool. Your clothes also stay in better condition than when dried in other dryers. You don’t need an external vent hose; the drain hose can be connected directly to an internal waste pipe.

+ Much lower energy consumption compared to other tumble dryers
+ Clothes stay in better condition thanks to the low drying temperature
+ Also suitable for delicate fabrics
+ No external vent hose required
- Drying time can be longer (depending on the machine)

Condenser dryers: fast drying times

A white dryer with an open door reveals a silver drum, set against a dark backdrop.

A condenser dryer collects the moisture from your laundry in a condensate tank, just like a heat pump dryer. This means you don’t need an external vent hose, and you can place both condenser and heat pump dryers anywhere in the home. You do need to empty the tank. The energy consumption of a condenser dryer is much higher compared with a heat pump dryer. The purchase price is slightly lower, and drying times are generally faster. That’s because a condenser dryer uses electric heating elements that blow hot air around.

+ Slightly lower purchase price compared with a heat pump dryer
+ No external vent hose required
+ Fast drying times
- Higher energy consumption compared with other tumble dryers

Air-vented dryers: plug in and go

A white washing machine stands on a brown floor against a turquoise wall. The machine's display reads "10:27".

This dryer expels moist air and lint outside via a vent hose. You need a hole in an exterior wall for the hose. A vented dryer operates at a high temperature, so your laundry dries quickly. To achieve this, it uses a lot of energy. This type of dryer is outdated, so the range is small. Looking for an energy‑efficient dryer that will last you years? Choose a heat pump dryer or condenser dryer.

+ Fast drying times
- Requires an external wall vent
- High energy consumption
- No longer supported for maintenance

The best dryers

Self cleaning condenser

A person in a blue shirt loads gray and white clothes into a white washing machine with a silver rim.

A self‑cleaning condenser is a handy technology increasingly found in modern tumble dryers. It ensures the dryer’s condenser cleans itself automatically, which greatly reduces maintenance. This means you don’t have to spend time and effort cleaning the condenser manually, giving you more convenience and comfort. Besides easier maintenance, a self‑cleaning condenser has more benefits. Energy consumption can be reduced because a clean condenser transfers heat optimally. This leads to more efficient operation and therefore lower energy use. That’s not only better for the environment but can also lower your energy bill. Another advantage is a reduced risk of overheating. Because the condenser stays clean, dust and dirt can’t build up and impede heat transfer. This helps prevent the dryer from overheating, which could cause faults or even pose a fire risk.

Energy labels: choose the most efficient tumble dryer

A hand adjusts a silver control knob on a white washing machine with various wash cycle options listed.

Compare tumble dryers by looking at the energy label. This mandatory label shows how efficiently the machine uses energy. Tumble dryers are now rated from A to G. Models with energy label A are the most efficient, while G uses the most. Besides the energy class (the letter), also check the annual energy consumption. This helps you compare different tumble dryers properly. When you compare energy consumption, the heat pump dryer is by far the most efficient. You can save hundreds of euros.

Compare and calculate tumble dryer load capacity

In a laundromat, a person unloads clothes from a silver dryer. The machine has a black control panel with a digital display.

Load capacity indicates how many kilograms of laundry fit in the dryer per cycle. A drum capacity of 8 kg or more is standard. The larger the drum, the more space your laundry has. Extra space has many benefits: your laundry dries faster, creases less and the dryer uses less energy at the same time. Thanks to electronic moisture sensors, a full or half‑full drum doesn’t matter so much anymore. A less full drum finishes sooner. For small households, it’s therefore often more economical to use a dryer with a large drum.

New tumble dryer features

A modern laundry room features orange cabinets, a black washer and dryer, a sink, and woven baskets for storage.

Electrical appliances are getting smarter and better, and tumble dryers are no exception. Handy innovations make laundry day easier. Try comparing dryers based on these new features. Humidity sensors check how wet the laundry is and automatically adjust the programme, saving energy. A self‑cleaning condenser rinses itself, so you don’t have to. More importantly, a clean condenser prevents energy loss, keeping consumption as low as possible. Is your dryer near a bedroom? A brushless motor is more efficient, more durable and especially quieter. Smart tumble dryers connect via an app to your tablet or smartphone, so you can control them remotely.

Choosing drying programmes

A tan stuffed bunny is inside a white washing machine, visible through the partially open door.

Choose the drying programme based on your laundry. For bedding, towels and jeans, select the extra‑dry cotton programme. Cupboard‑dry means dry enough to put straight into the wardrobe. Use this programme for cotton clothing and trousers. Want to iron afterwards? Use the iron‑dry programme. Dry synthetic clothing on the easy‑iron programme or steam programme (SteamCare). For delicate fabrics such as wool, choose the wool programme. In a hurry? Use the quick‑dry programme. Your clothes will be dry within 40 minutes. We recommend not overfilling the dryer. Note: energy consumption is higher with quick‑dry.

Handy accessories for your tumble dryer

Get even more out of your dryer with accessories. Add dryer balls to speed up drying and improve results. Bothered by noise? Small rubber shock absorbers reduce vibration. They also provide extra grip, so your machine stays neatly in place. Save space by stacking the dryer on top of the washing machine with a stacking kit or frame. A fragrance flacon gives your laundry a lovely scent while drying. Need a new vent hose, adaptor or hose clamp? We’ve got everything to get your tumble dryer up and running again.
