What is a VR headset?

A VR headset is a device that places you fully inside a virtual world. With 3D visuals and sensors that track your movements, it feels as though you’re truly in that digital environment. Whether you want to play games, watch movies, or train for work, a VR headset offers an immersive experience that goes beyond a regular screen.

How does a VR headset work?

A person sits relaxed on a couch, using a VR headset to watch a huge virtual screen with an anime-inspired landscape.

A VR headset lets you step into another world. It’s a device you wear on your head. The 2 small displays inside the headset show images from slightly different angles, so your eyes perceive depth, and you see a realistic 3D picture. Advanced sensors in the headset register every movement of your head, making everything look even more lifelike. For example, if you look down and see an abyss in the virtual world, the system tracks that view so the abyss remains beneath you. This makes it feel as if you’re truly standing in that world. In addition to Virtual Reality, you can also choose Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality . These 2 technologies each offer a different experience.

Thanks to the headset’s ergonomic design, it stays comfortable even during longer sessions, and built-in speakers provide spatial audio, letting you hear sounds from all directions, just as in real life.

The quality of a VR headset largely depends on its refresh rate: how quickly the image updates. A good headset achieves at least 60 frames per second, but newer models often go well beyond that. You’ll notice the difference straight away: at a low refresh rate, the image looks choppy when you turn your head quickly, which can make you feel dizzy or nauseous. A higher refresh rate delivers smoother motion and a more realistic experience. Also consider the type of VR headset that suits you: wired, wireless, or mobile. Mobile options are often more affordable but usually offer lower refresh rates. Check whether the headset is compatible with your existing devices, such as your PC, console, or smartphone, and choose matching VR accessories, like charging docks for your controllers, to make everyday use easier.

Comfort is also key. Pick a model with an adjustable head strap and a well-balanced design so you can wear it for longer without it digging in. Finally, you can choose between 3 DoF (degrees of freedom) and 6 DoF. With 3 DoF you can look around, but you can’t walk freely through the virtual world – you use a joystick for that. With 6 DoF, you can: sensors track your movements in the room and define your play area. If you’re about to step outside that area, the headset will warn you. That way, you can experience the virtual world realistically without bumping into furniture.

What can you do with a VR headset?

You can do far more with a VR headset than most people think: from gaming and watching films to taking training courses for work.

Gaming

A VR headset is most commonly used for gaming, as it fully immerses players in the virtual world. Some consoles, such as the PlayStation 5, offer their own VR headsets. These PlayStation VR headsets are made specifically for the PS5. You can play all kinds of games, from action and shooters to horror titles and realistic simulations. Thanks to built-in sensors, the headset tracks every movement of your head and often your hands too via controllers. This means you can literally peek around a corner, swing a sword, or hold a steering wheel as if you were actually in the game. That makes gaming with a VR headset not only more exciting, but also much more intense and immersive than on a regular screen. You can also use a VR headset while gaming seated. Want to make your gaming experience even more comfortable? Choose the right gaming accessories, such as a gaming chair.

Watch movies & series

A VR headset isn’t just for gaming. You can also use it to watch movies and series, for example with the Meta Quest 3S. For this, you use special VR films or 360° videos, where the image wraps all the way around you. It feels as if you’re right in the middle of the movie rather than just watching it. With apps like Bigscreen VR, Netflix VR and YouTube VR, you get access to hundreds of movies and videos you can experience in 3D or 360 degrees. Whether you want to sit in a virtual cinema or view a video from every angle, a VR headset turns watching films into a completely new experience.

Work & follow trainings

A VR headset isn’t just useful for leisure; it’s great for work and education too. More and more companies use virtual reality to hold meetings, provide training, or facilitate learning. With dedicated apps, you enter a digital meeting room as a virtual avatar and collaborate as if you were sitting right next to your colleagues. VR also offers huge possibilities in other sectors. In hospitals, doctors practise virtual surgeries, pilots train with realistic flight simulations, and trainee teachers teach in a simulated classroom. From the military to schools and healthcare providers, VR helps make training safer, cheaper, and more effective. The learning experience is also far more intense: participants are more engaged and experience more positive emotions than with traditional training or videos.

For a good experience, high image quality, a smooth refresh rate, and a comfortable design are important. Headsets also differ by type, from mobile to wireless models, and you can choose between 3 DoF or 6 DoF for free movement in virtual space. Whether for entertainment, business tasks, or learning experiences, a VR headset offers a unique and interactive way to experience digital content.
