We use WhatsApp every day and can hardly live without it. Making weekend plans with your friends, quickly checking something with a colleague or just talking about your day in the family group. Using WhatsApp on your phone is very logical, and you might also know that you can use it on your laptop. But can you also use WhatsApp on a tablet? You certainly can. There are 3 ways to use WhatsApp on your tablet: via your browser, with the official WhatsApp app or by installing Tablet Messenger. Note: the last 2 options are only possible on an Android tablet. On an iPad you only use WhatsApp via the browser.

The easiest way to chat on your tablet is with WhatsApp Web, which you also use on your laptop. In 3 simple steps you can already start using WhatsApp Web on your tablet:

  1. Go to web.whatsapp.com in your browser. A QR code will appear.
  2. Open WhatsApp on your phone, click on the 3 vertical dots in the top right and choose ‘Linked devices’.
  3. Tap ‘Link a device’ and scan the QR code on your tablet.

Your tablet is now linked to WhatsApp! You no longer need your phone to use WhatsApp on your tablet. Do you have an iPad? Then this is the only way to use WhatsApp on your tablet.

Install the official WhatsApp app

There is an official WhatsApp app that you can download on an Android tablet. This is most convenient if you have 2 different phone numbers, because you cannot use the same number on your tablet and your phone at the same time. WhatsApp sends a verification code to your phone number via SMS. If you have a tablet with its own SIM card, you can simply verify this code on your tablet. If your tablet does not have a SIM card, you need to insert the SIM card into a smartphone for a moment.

The third way to use WhatsApp on your tablet is via the Tablet Messenger app. Note: this app is only available on Google Play and can therefore only be used on Android tablets. Tablet Messenger is a kind of collection app that allows you to use different messenger tools, including WhatsApp. You link WhatsApp within Tablet Messenger in exactly the same way as via WhatsApp Web. The handy thing about Tablet Messenger is that you do not have to go to your browser every time to use WhatsApp, but can send your messages directly via an app.

What are the differences between WhatsApp on an iPad and an Android tablet?

The WhatsApp versions on iPad and Android tablets are very similar in use. You send messages, make voice calls, hold video calls and share files in exactly the same way. However, there are a few small differences between WhatsApp on your iPad and your Android tablet. WhatsApp on an iPad is optimised for the larger iPad screen. Android tablets are less optimised, which can cause your chats to look stretched. In addition, iPad users can always use split screen if they want. This allows them to perform other tasks on the tablet alongside chatting. This function on Android tablets depends on the features of the device.

Unlinking WhatsApp on a tablet

Do you no longer want to use WhatsApp on your tablet? Then you can unlink the application. This means that you log out on your tablet. You do this as follows:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your tablet and go to ‘Settings’.
  2. Find and select ‘My account’ and then ‘Devices’ or ‘Device management’.
  3. You will see a list of devices that your WhatsApp account is linked to. Find your tablet.
  4. Click on the name of your tablet and choose ‘Unlink’.

WhatsApp is now unlinked. No messages or data will be synchronised between your account and the tablet anymore.

It’s possible to use WhatsApp on a tablet and a smartphone at the same time. To do this, you do need to connect via WhatsApp Web. The messages you send via your phone will also appear when you connect with your tablet. When you use the official WhatsApp app, it’s not possible to chat on your tablet and your phone with the same account.
