iPhone X

We've always wanted to make an iPhone that's all screen. An iPhone you get so absorbed in that you lose yourself in it completely. One so intelligent that it responds to a tap, your voice or even your gaze. With iPhone X, we have now achieved this goal. Welcome to the future.

Design and display

How do you make a highly intelligent device whose body and display are one continuous element? We set this goal when we made the first iPhone. And with iPhone X, we've achieved that goal.

iPhone in its purest form.

We wanted to create a continuous surface to make sure nothing comes between you and your iPhone. That's why we replaced the home button with new ways of navigating that still feel familiar.

Your fingers find their way on their own.

Home screen
Swipe up and you're right back where you started.

Multitasking
Swipe up and hold your finger on the screen to instantly see all your open apps.

Control Panel
Swipe down to open the fully customisable Control Panel.

Siri
Press and hold the side button to ask Siri a question.

So much technology. In so little space.

The TrueDepth camera system lets you take great photos and use Face ID. Housed in a tiny module above the display, it's still packed with the most advanced technology we've ever developed.

New: Super Retina. Designed to catch the eye.

The OLED panel in the Super Retina HD display is not just any OLED. We had it specially made to our own exacting standards. The result is an HDR display with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, high resolution and brightness, wide colour reproduction and the most accurate colours available.

Brilliant from edge to edge.
Using pioneering technologies, the OLED panel follows the curves of the device to the furthest corners. In addition, anti-aliasing is applied to the subpixels, so there is no distortion at the edges.

The most accurate colours available.
The advanced colour management system in the Super Retina HD display is the best there is. Whatever colour mode you view your content in (P3 or sRGB), iPhone X automatically displays everything correctly. So the colours you see are exactly as the director or designer intended.

True Tone. Make it easy on your eyes.

True Tone technology uses an advanced ambient light sensor to adjust the white balance on the screen to the colour temperature of the light around you. As a result, images look as natural on the display as they do on paper, providing more peace of mind for your eyes.

HDR. Now premiering on iPhone.

iPhone X is a full High Dynamic Range (HDR) display. You can watch movies and TV series in Dolby Vision and HDR10. Your HDR photos now look even more stunning. And you can also watch titles in HDR via iTunes and Netflix, for example.

The strongest glass in a smartphone ever.

The front and back are made entirely of glass. It is the strongest glass we have ever made, with a reinforcement layer that goes as much as 50 per cent deeper. The use of seven layers of ink ensures just the right hues and coverage, and the reflective optical layer deepens colours even more. And thanks to the grease-resistant coating, smudges and fingerprints wipe off effortlessly.

Wireless charging for a wireless world.

We've always envisioned making iPhone completely wireless. That includes freedom from charging cables and headphone cords. With a glass back and built-in wireless charging system, iPhone X is ready for a wireless future.

Surgical steel.

The stainless steel band that wraps around iPhone X and reinforces it is made of an alloy we specially developed. This alloy is tougher and purer, and also has a beautiful shine. And for the space-grey version, we use a PVD process to precisely match the colour of the stainless steel band to that of the glass.

Resistant to splashes, water and dust.

iPhone X is crafted with microscopic precision to withstand splashes, water and dust.

Face ID

What's more natural than a touch? A glance. That was the thinking behind Face ID, a powerful and secure authentication system that is even more convenient than Touch ID. Unlocking is quick, easy and intuitive.

Ultimate technology for ultimate simplicity.

The TrueDepth camera system consists of revolutionary technologies. They work together in real time and instantly recognise your face using detailed relief measurements.

Your face is your safe password.

With Face ID, you only unlock iPhone X when you look at it. So you can't fool it with photos or masks. The scan of your face is encrypted and protected by Secure Enclave. And verification takes place directly on the device, not in the cloud.

Once recognised, always recognised.

The A11 Bionic chip is self-learning, so it recognises changes in your face. So feel free to put on glasses. Wear a hat. Or grow a beard. Your friends might not recognise you, but iPhone X will.

So smart that it only works when you want it to.

For added security, Face ID knows where you focus your attention. This means your iPhone X is only unlocked when you look at it with your eyes open. You can also use Face ID to display notifications and messages, keep the screen illuminated when you're reading, and instantly turn down the sound of an alarm clock or ringer when you look at your phone.

TrueDepth camera

How much innovative thinking can you cram into a tiny space? A lot, apparently. The TrueDepth camera system incorporates advanced cameras and sensors, creating completely new capabilities unique to iPhone X.

Big innovation in a tiny space.

A complex system of technologies works closely with the A11 Bionic chip. This enables Face ID, Portrait Mode selfies and Animoji.

Face ID. Your face is your secure password.

iPhone X's revolutionary authentication system starts with the data collected by the TrueDepth camera. Sensors capture the unique shape of your face and compare it to the information protected by the A11 Bionic chip's Secure Enclave. Only if it's a match will iPhone X be unlocked.

Portrait mode. For selfies with more depth.

Take selfies with a depth-of-field effect in which your face appears sharp against a beautifully blurred background. Thanks to the TrueDepth camera and A11 Bionic chip, just tap your finger to take a photo with this effect.

Portrait exposure. For selfies with professional effects.

Portrait Exposure is based on extensive research into the art and skill of portrait photography. Complex algorithms are used to analyse how light falls on your face. Then that data is used to create impressive lighting effects.

Animoji. Take on the role of an emoji.

Admit it, you've always wanted to be a unicorn. In collaboration with the A11 Bionic chip, the TrueDepth camera records and analyses more than 50 different muscle movements, then mimics your facial expressions with 12 different Animoji.

Clips. Videos that take you anywhere.

Clips is a free app that lets you create and share fun videos with things like text, graphics and effects. The new Selfie Scenes on iPhone X make Clips even more fun: be surrounded by animated landscapes thanks to the TrueDepth camera.

Two 12-MP cameras

Can a camera capture more than the naked eye can see? To find out, we combined faster-responding cameras with optical image stabilisation with the A11 Bionic chip's self-learning system. The result is a photography system that sees, understands and does more.

Wide-angle lens camera
Thanks to a six-element lens with ƒ/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilisation (OBS) and a larger, faster 12-MP sensor, the world's most popular camera is now even better.

Telephoto camera

The powerful telephoto camera on iPhone X with an aperture of ƒ/2.4 includes a second OBS system that uses seven magnets. The two cameras give you optical zoom to bring your subject even closer. And shoot great photos in Portrait mode.

Portrait mode. For a more beautiful depth-of-field effect.

Portrait mode has been further enhanced to offer sharper detail, nicer blurred backgrounds, improved low-light performance and a flash when you need it.

Portrait exposure. Real-time photo studio effects.

Portrait exposure is based on the basic principles of lighting in photography. Complex software and hardware, such as cameras with depth measurement and face recognition, create amazing photo studio effects.

New, advanced ISP. Get more out of every photo opportunity.

The smart Apple-designed image signal processor recognises image elements such as people, movement and lighting. So your photos are optimised even before you take them. It also offers advanced pixel processing, wide colour registration, faster autofocus and better HDR photos.

OBS for both lenses. Superb photos even in low light.

Taking photos and videos in low light is one of the hardest things to do as a photographer. But thanks to optical image stabilisation for the rear cameras, this is now easier than ever. So at the end of the day, your creativity really takes off.

New filters. Better flash. More fun.

From the moment you take a photo to your final edit, iPhone X delivers spectacular results effortlessly. And thanks to the latest HEIF compression technology, the photos you take now are only half the size as before. Without compromising on quality. So you can shoot to your heart's content.

Live Photo effects and new filters
Turn your favourite Live Photo into a funny video that keeps repeating. Play it backwards. Turn fireworks into bright streaks in the sky with the long-exposure effect. And apply new filters for more natural skin tones or to give portraits a classic look.

True Tone Flash with 4 LEDs and Slow Sync
Slow Sync combines a slow shutter speed with a short, pulsating flash. Ideal when light levels are low, as this exposes both the subject and the background perfectly. And with True Tone Flash with 4 LEDs, exposure is up to twice as even, so you get less overexposed areas.

Videos that could go straight into the cinema.

Whether you're a proud parent, a film student or a professional director, iPhone X lets you shoot spectacular videos. Apple-designed video coding provides real-time image processing for optimal image quality. And thanks to HEVC compression, your video files are only half the size they used to be. Without compromising on quality.

More stable videos
Advanced video stabilisation uses a new, larger sensor and the powerful ISP to make your recordings more stable. And optical image stabilisation is designed to combat motion blur, even in videos shot in low light. So anyone can shoot stable video, even if you don't have a steady hand.

Photos taken with iPhone X.

We asked professional photographers and hobbyists from around the world to use iPhone X to take photos of what inspires them. Their photos paint a great picture of everything you can do with the cameras on iPhone X.

A11 Bionic chip

Is it possible to make a chip that is both powerful and smart? Meet the A11 Bionic chip, the most powerful and intelligent chip ever in a smartphone.

Unrivalled power.

The A11 Bionic chip features 4.3 billion transistors and six cores. The four efficiency cores are up to 70 per cent faster than the A10 Fusion chip, and the two performance cores are up to 25 per cent faster. And if you need a quick turbo boost, the CPU can address all six cores simultaneously.

What a neural engine is.

A neural engine is hardware built specifically for self-learning systems, a form of artificial intelligence that allows computers to learn by observing. This hardware can perform calculations for neural networks incredibly quickly and efficiently.

What a neural engine does.

The neural engine in the A11 Bionic chip has two cores that recognise people, locations and objects. It can perform as many as 600 billion tasks per second, enabling interesting new features such as Face ID and Animoji.

A chip that uses energy smarter.

The A11 Bionic chip uses its enormous power efficiently by dividing tasks between cores. So the things you do most often, like messaging and browsing the web, are faster and use less energy. We've also added a specially designed battery to iPhone X, making it last up to two hours longer without a mid-charge than iPhone 7.

Augmented Reality. More realistic than ever.

With the A11 Bionic chip, AR games and apps look even smoother and more realistic.

A rock-solid chip made for Metal 2 and Core ML.

Metal 2 is Apple-designed graphics software that allows developers to create console-style games. And Core ML allows developers to integrate self-learning systems into their apps. The GPU in the A11 Bionic chip is optimised for these new, spectacular 3D games and AR apps.

Wireless charging

How do you design an iPhone for a wireless world? By building on wireless technology already used for headphones and advanced networking to enable easy wireless charging. With its glass back and efficient charging system, all you have to do to charge your iPhone X is lay it down.

Works anywhere.

We wanted people everywhere to enjoy the convenience of wireless charging. That's why iPhone X works with wireless Qi chargers you'll often find in hotels, cafes, airports and cars. In addition, Belkin and mophie have developed two new wireless chargers specifically for iPhone X.

AirPower. Wireless charging dramatically simplified.

The elegant, super-thin new AirPower mat lets you charge multiple devices wirelessly, without having to place them at a precise point. Simply place up to three compatible devices, such as the latest iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods, anywhere on the mat to charge them simultaneously.
