What should you consider when choosing the right dimensions for your TV?

To determine the right dimensions for your new television, consider 3 things. First, determine the viewing distance between the TV and your sofa. Second, consider the size of the room where your TV will be placed. Third, the height of your room also plays a role. Based on this information, you can determine the ideal TV size for you. TV size is expressed in inches (1 inch is approximately 2.5 centimetres). This number indicates the size of the TV screen and is measured diagonally (from top left to bottom right).

1. The viewing distance between your sofa and the television

Which TV size suits your situation largely depends on the viewing distance. This is the number of metres between your TV screen and your sofa. The greater the viewing distance, the larger your TV should be for comfortable viewing. If you sit less than 2.5 metres from the screen, a small TV with a screen size of up to 32 inches is ideal. If the viewing distance is somewhere between 2 and 4 metres, we recommend a medium-sized TV between 40 and 58 inches. If you sit more than 3.5 metres from the screen, a large TV of 60 inches or more will suit you well.

2. The size of your room

In addition to viewing distance, the size of the room you’re buying a TV for also plays a role in the ideal inch size. You don’t want half the space to be taken up by a television. If you’re looking for a TV for your bedroom, dining room or study, a small TV is best. Medium-sized TVs are better suited to larger spaces such as the living room or attic. If you have plenty of space and want to create a home cinema, then large TVs come into play.

3. The height of your ceiling

If you’re going to mount your TV, the height of your ceiling also plays a major role in determining your TV size. The higher your TV is mounted, the greater the viewing distance will be and the larger the ideal inch size. Our tip: try to mount the television so that the top of the screen is at eye level. This reduces the chance of neck strain if you watch a lot of TV. In practice this isn’t always possible, and your TV may end up higher on the wall. Not sure what inch size your current TV is and can’t find the manual? You can measure it yourself with a tape measure or a large ruler (be careful not to damage the screen) from the top-left corner to the bottom-right corner. It’s important to measure only the screen and not the front bezel. To convert centimetres to inches, multiply the screen diagonal in cm by 0.39. Round this number to find out your TV’s size.
