Defrosting your freezer might not be the most enjoyable chore, but it is important to do it from time to time. When a lot of ice builds up in your freezer, you lose space to store your food, and it uses much more energy. In this article, you’ll find tips on how to defrost a freezer and how often you should do it.

How does excess ice build‑up form in a freezer?

Interior of a freezer covered in heavy frost, with a thick layer of ice and long icicles hanging down from the top shelf and back wall.

Every time you open and close the freezer, or if the door doesn’t close properly, moist air gets inside. This moisture accumulates, often on the walls or in the vents, and then freezes. Over time, this turns into a substantial build‑up of ice. This problem gets worse if you have too many products in your freezer, as ice can form on them as well.

Why should you defrost a freezer?

When there is a lot of ice in your freezer, you have less space for your food, and the appliance uses more energy to keep everything frozen. This costs you money and increases the risk of food spoiling if the temperature doesn’t stay consistently low. That’s why it’s important to defrost your freezer completely on a regular basis, so it can work efficiently again.

  1. Empty the freezer. Store the food in a cool box or another cool place.
  2. Switch the freezer off. Unplug it from the socket as well.
  3. Place towels inside the freezer. These will absorb all the melted ice. For extra safety, put a drip tray under the freezer to catch any water.
  4. Let the ice melt. This can take a few hours. If you want to break up large chunks of ice, you can use a wooden spatula or wooden spoon.
  5. Dry everything and clean the freezer. Clean the inside with a cloth and a mild cleaning agent.
  6. Switch the freezer back on. Plug it back into the socket and turn the freezer on.

How often you need to defrost a freezer depends on the type and size of the appliance. For example, it usually takes longer for large chest freezers to be affected by ice build‑up than smaller under‑counter models. We recommend defrosting large freezers about twice a year, and smaller models around 4 times a year to prevent excessive ice formation. There are also NoFrost freezers. In these models, the technology prevents ice build‑up by removing moisture from the air inside the freezer.
